Alice Lloyd College is pleased to announce that Liberty (Libby) Danner, a junior communications major from Hazard, Kentucky, has been awarded a prestigious study abroad scholarship through the Kentucky Branch of the English-Speaking Union. Libby will spend a month this summer studying creative writing in Scotland at the University of Edinburgh. Additionally, she will be able to spend time sight-seeing in both Scotland and England.

Each year, students from across the Commonwealth compete for a chance to win one of these Travel and Learn Abroad (TLab) scholarships, and because of this, the application process is understandably strenuous. Libby worked for months to complete application forms, write essays, and gather recommendation letters; following that, she was notified that she qualified for an in-person interview. As always, the ALC community rallied to help, and several professors worked with Libby to prepare for possible interview questions. All of this hard work paid off when Libby received the call that she had been named a TLab University Scholar.

Libby views this trip as a major blessing in her life. “International travel isn’t very common around here, and I just feel so grateful for this opportunity to make a dream I had as a little girl finally come true,” Libby said. As a future speech pathologist, she views the study of creative writing as essential to her future career since using the written word for expression can help students who may have difficulties communicating verbally. While the coursework will be strenuous, Libby is no stranger to hard work. She is a dedicated student, a member of the ALC women’s soccer team, treasurer of the ALC chapter of the Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society, and the female Head Resident Advisor.

“International travel is a wonderful way to expand a student’s world view. This trip will be an amazing learning experience for Libby, and she will grow both intellectually and emotionally because of this amazing opportunity,” stated Mrs. Natalie Holt, a former TLab scholar currently serving as associate professor of English at ALC, who encouraged Libby to apply for the scholarship and helped with necessary paperwork. The entire campus is thrilled that Libby will be representing ALC abroad this summer. Dr. Charles Marshall, ALC Provost, stated that “We are all so proud of Libby. She is an excellent student and even better person. She is a leader on campus who has a bright future ahead of her. She will represent Alice Lloyd College well, and make the most of this opportunity.”

Congratulations, Libby, from all of us at ALC!!!
