When Alice Lloyd first came to Kentucky, she declared “The leaders are here!” For this reason, the Alice Lloyd College Business Department is committed to developing today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Through training in Business and Entrepreneurship, our students have a competitive edge when leaving our campus. Many go on to obtain advanced degrees, while others choose to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation.
Alice Lloyd College’s Business Program provides students with a basic understanding of the primary functional areas of business (accounting, finance, management, and marketing). The core component of the program is designed to provide a broad educational base through substantial education and through a common body of business knowledge. The elective component gives students the flexibility to tailor their course of study. Generally, the first two years of study consist primarily of pre-business courses and general education. The following two years are oriented toward providing the student with a strong business background and in-depth study of the business environment. The Business Program also offers minors in Accounting and Business Administration. In the fall of 2013, Alice Lloyd will introduce its new major in Accounting.
Our Purpose
The Business Program strives to prepare students for positions of leadership and service to Appalachia. Graduates of this program can provide leadership through self-employment, employment in area businesses, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and through graduate work or further study in business-related fields.
The economic imperative of this area is to establish a diversified economic base that will provide a variety of job opportunities. Providing this region with graduates who are well-prepared and dedicated to service in Appalachia may serve to attract new industry and increase efficiency in existing businesses. The Alice Lloyd graduate is encouraged to understand the area’s economic condition and is challenged to consider proposals for improvement. The foresight and commitment of those indigenous to this region remain the driving force for needed changes.
Degrees Offered
Business Administration
The major in Business Administration prepares each student for employment in business or related fields, for graduate school, and/or for business-related research. The variety of courses offered under the Business Administration major at Alice Lloyd College will provide students with an opportunity to expand and develop their knowledge of business and accounting relevant to their future career and educational goals. By working closely with an advisor, an individual plan of study will be created to satisfy the student’s educational needs and career aspirations.

Career Planning Workshops
All Business Administration majors are required to attend three workshops in career planning, resume writing, and job interview techniques prior to graduation. Students may attend these workshops in any year after their freshman year, but must attend all three workshops in the same year.
Accounting Minor
This minor is open to all students regardless of their designated major. The accounting minor is intended to offer students from other disciplines an opportunity to complement their degree program with supportive courses in accounting. Business Administration majors may also pursue an accounting minor.
Business Administration Minor
This minor is open to students from disciplines other than Business Administration. The elective portion of the Business Administration minor allows students to tailor the minor to fit their specific major.
Leadership Minor
This minor is designed to help enhance students’ knowledge of leadership models in today’s world.
Alice Lloyd College pursues the ideal of comprehensive leadership development for its students. Knowledge is one component that develops leaders; therefore, this program contains aspects of leadership philosophy, citizenship, and cultural development, which build upon a strong traditional liberal arts academic program. The institution attempts to infuse leadership education initiatives into all aspects of the educational experience including: formal classroom instruction, activities that help students learn to cope with cultures outside of Appalachia, group learning activities, involvement in service to others, opportunities to question their moral, ethical, and religious positions and activities that place them in leadership roles.
Meet Our Faculty
Dr. Lenore Mitchell Pollard
Dr. Lenore Mitchell Pollard was born in Oakland, CA. As the daughter of a career soldier, she had the opportunity to experience living in four states and the Panama Canal Zone. She has lived in eastern Kentucky since she was 14 and proudly claims Knott County as her home.
Dr. Pollard received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Alice Lloyd College in 1992. While at Alice Lloyd College, she earned state and national awards in Business Decision Making, Job Interview, and Ms. Future Business Executive. She was also awarded Outstanding Senior in Business Administration and the Caney Scholarship to help fund her graduate studies. During her junior year at Alice Lloyd College, she accepted Christ as her Savior, which she expresses is the most rewarding decision she has made in her life.
Dr. Pollard received her Master of Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University in 1993 where she graduated second in her class. In 2006, Dr. Pollard earned a Doctorate of Management in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. Her dissertation is titled Presidential Leadership Styles and Innovation in Private Liberal Arts Institutions of Higher Education.
Before entering higher education, Dr. Pollard had a career in marketing research and sales. She performed the test market for Beech Nut’s Trophy tobacco and conducted marketing research for Proctor and Gamble that led to the introduction of Low Fat Jiff Peanut Butter. While working for Nabisco, she managed over one million dollars of sales and increased sales for her territory 23%. For the last 17 years, Dr. Pollard has taught business administration at Alice Lloyd College where she also chairs the Business Administration Department and coordinates the Leadership Education Program. While at Alice Lloyd College, Dr. Pollard has twice received the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.
Dr. Pollard’s most valued accomplishment is her family. She has been happily married for 20 years to her husband, Robert C. Pollard, and they have three wonderful children: Tannon (age 14), Mitchell (age 12), and Viola Faith (age 5).
Mrs. Denise H. Jacobs
Denise Hylton Jacobs graduated from Alice Lloyd College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1986. She earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Morehead State University in 1987 and began teaching at Alice Lloyd College that fall. She has since completed additional graduate work in Economics at Morehead State University and teaches both Business and Economics courses at ALC.
Mrs. Jacobs received the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1993 and currently chairs the Social Science/Business Division at Alice Lloyd College along with the Academic Affairs Committee. She is also a member of the Caney Cottage Scholarship Committee. Mrs. Jacobs is the primary adviser for Phi Beta Lambda, a national organization for students with an interest in business. ALC’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has been named Kentucky’s outstanding chapter for the past 2 years. In addition, she is an active member of Hindman First Baptist Church and lives in Pippa Passes with her husband, Byron Jacobs, and their 3 children.
Dr. Jerry Wayne Slone
Dr. Jerry Wayne Slone graduated from Alice Lloyd College in 1978. Afterwards, he attended the University of Kentucky, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1979 and a Master’s in Business Administration in 1981. Dr. Slone is a licensed Certified Public Accountant. He graduated from the University of Louisville’s School of Law in 1989, and, in 2012, he completed his Doctorate of Education at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Dr. Slone often speaks at local civic events as well as grade schools, high schools, and college commencement ceremonies. He also speaks frequently at Alice Lloyd College Alumni events, traveling the region, providing updates on the college to Alumni chapters.
After graduating from law school in 1989, he returned to Hindman to practice law. He was the Knott County Trial Commissioner and is currently the Master Commissioner for Knott County. He is a former attorney for the City of Hindman and President of the Knott County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Slone was appointed as a charter member of the Pippa Passes City Council when the City was incorporated in 1984 and continued on the council until going to law school in 1986. Upon returning from law school, he was elected to the Pippa Passes City Council from 1990 to 1998. He served as the Mayor of Pippa Passes from 1998 through 2002.
Dr. Slone has been a faculty member at Alice Lloyd College since 2001. His primary field of instruction is Accounting and Business Law. He has been a member of the Alice Lloyd College Alumni Board since its inception in 1997. He has served as the Chairman of the Alumni Fund Raising Committee since 2001 and is currently Vice President of the Alice Lloyd College Alumni Board. Over the last ten years, he has worked extensively with Director of Alumni Relations, Teresa Grender, to increase alumni financial contributions to the College. In 2012, the percentage of Alumni giving to the college reached a record high of 42%, which placed the school 29th in the nation in alumni giving and number one in the nation for all regional colleges and universities.
In 1996, Dr. Slone married Holly Preece, daughter of John and Wilma Preece of Brinkley, Kentucky. They have a son, Zane, and a daughter, Eden. The Slones reside in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. He and his wife are members of the Hindman Baptist Church where they serve as Vacation Bible School Directors each year.
