The Alice Lloyd College Women’s Tennis team kicked off its season last Saturday with meets against Carlow University (PA) and Berea College. The matches were played at the Knott County tennis facility.

ALC dropped the opening match against Carlow 6-3, but the girls were very competitive. Freshmen Serena Nickell and Crilda Brown got things off to a good start with a win playing No. 3 doubles. Unfortunately, Brown turned an ankle during the match. Though able to finish, she was unable to continue for the rest of the day, leaving the team a player short. Her doubles partner, Nickell, also won her singles match in a third set tie break, playing at No. 5. Senior Lydia Harris, playing at No. 1 singles, won in a third set tie break to account for the other win.

Being a player short put the team at a significant disadvantage against a much improved Berea College team, losing 8-1. The one win was provided by Serena Nickell playing at No. 5 singles. Senior Rebekah Bevins, playing at No.2 singles, narrowly missed adding a second victory, coming up short in a very close third set tie break.

The Lady Eagles’ tennis season continues this weekend as the team travels to Brescia University to play the host team, as well as IU East.
