About Us
The June Buchanan School (JBS) is a private, college preparatory, co-educational school for grades K-12. JBS strives to recruit students who aspire to academic excellence and desire a learning environment operating on Christian principles. Classrooms are located in the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts. JBS students utilize campus facilities such as the McGaw Library and Learning Resources Center, the Davis Student Center, Campbell Arts Center, campus recreational facilities, the Perry Campus Center and campus food service.
The June Buchanan School and Alice Lloyd College are the two primary components of the campus corporate entity, the Caney Creek Community Center, Inc., which was founded in 1917 to promote the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical welfare of young people from the mountains. The primary administrative officer of JBS is the Dean, who represents the interests of JBS students, faculty, staff and parents.
Although The June Buchanan School shares some common historical and organizational features with the College, it is a thoroughly separate entity. JBS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It designs and maintains its own curriculum, hires its own faculty and staff, develops and maintains its own rules and policies, formulates its own budget, maintains its own admissions procedures and operates extracurricular sports programs under the auspices of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. The Dean operates The School in compliance with Kentucky law and, where necessary, in accordance with guidelines established by the Education Professional Standards Board.
History
The June Buchanan School, located in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, was established in 1984 as a private, co-educational, academically challenging college preparatory school. The school was named for June Buchanan, the co-founder of Alice Lloyd College, who came to Caney Creek in Knott County from her home state of New York. Dr. Buchanan (“Miss June”) became a legend in her own time, educating Appalachian students for more than 68 years until her death in 1988 at 100 years of age. The June Buchanan School serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school’s charter is with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Philosophically, The June Buchanan School is committed to a classical standard of education in the arts and sciences.
Our Mission
The mission of The June Buchanan School is to nurture our students intellectually, physically, socially, and spiritually, emphasizing the development of character, responsibility, leadership, and service.
Why Are We Called Crusaders?
Many years ago, our school’s founder, Dr. June Buchanan, traveled across the country with young men and women who attended school at Pippa Passes. The young people ranged in age from very young elementary children to college students. These trips were called “Crusades,” and the individual participants were called “Crusaders.” They told people in faraway cities and towns about how they were being educated in the mountain valley of Pippa Passes, Kentucky. These young people spread the word about the good deeds that were being accomplished here on Caney Creek.
Athletic Facilities
JBS students participate in a wide variety of athletic activities. All Alice Lloyd College athletic facilities can be utilized by JBS students under adult supervision. A full listing of these facilities can be found here.
Food Services
The June Buchanan School does not operate its own cafeteria but uses the campus-dining hall (Hunger Din) where meals are catered by Pioneer Food Services. During the school year, JBS students eat at the facility from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The costs for lunches are included in the JBS tuition and fee arrangement.
The dining hall is a public eating facility where JBS students, ALC students, campus faculty and staff, alumni, board members and visitors are welcome. High standards of conduct are expected. The cafeteria hours of operation may vary slightly when The June Buchanan School is in session and Alice Lloyd College is not in session (two weeks in August and two weeks in January). Check out the Hunger Din menu here.
Library Services
The McGaw Library houses a collection totaling over 70,000 books, bound materials, newspapers, periodicals, and audiovisual material. JBS students and faculty have complete access to library resources and services. New searchable databases are available for JBS student use as well as interlibrary loan. The library staff assists JBS students with the use of database programs, reader’s advisory services, and the location of materials.
