Alice Lloyd College celebrated the start of the semester with the first event of the Robert M. Duncan Leadership Institute & Mentoring Program, Scoops with Swoop. The ice-cream social, held in Cushing Hall, welcomed new and returning Honors students.
Students enjoyed ice cream, visited with Swoop, the College’s mascot, and had the chance to connect with one another as they began a new academic year. The event marked the first in a series of activities designed to engage and encourage members of the Duncan Honors Program throughout the semester.
President Jim Stepp spoke to the group, emphasizing the importance of the Honors Program as part of the College’s mission. Named in honor of ALC Board of Trustees Chairman, Robert M. Duncan, the program inspires participants to excel both in the classroom and in service to others. Chairman Duncan has given selflessly of his time and knowledge to pour into the next generation of Appalachian leaders.
Program Director, Dr. Sara Pitts, said this about the event: “having the opportunity to invest in these students is one of the best parts of being at ALC. The connections that they make at ALC will last beyond graduation.” Scoops with Swoop was the perfect way to set the tone for the year ahead, giving students a chance to celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead as members of the Robert M. Duncan Leadership Institute & Mentoring Program.
