Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College baseball Eagles (5-17) played two contests on March 28th as Bluefield State College came to Pippa Passes. When the dust had settled, the Big Blue had earned two wins.

March 28th

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-5; BSC-10

Bluefield State pulled away in the middle innings to take the opener.

The game started with BSC producing a single to score a run (1-0). However, the hosts would answer.

ALC earned that run back and more in their half of the inning when TJay Mullins (3B) singled in the tying run (1-1), and an error and fielder’s choice allowed 2 more to score (3-1).

Bluefield used a triple and double in the second to produce 4 runs and regain the advantage (5-3).

Happily, for the home fans, Alice Lloyd responded again. Singles from Ryan Cozart (2B) and Chase Madden (DH), combined with a Cannon Ferrell (CF) double, and Mullins sacrifice fly would tie the score (5-5). Unfortunately, this would be the final run the hosts would produce.

Over the next three innings, the Big Blues would ride two homers and a triple to double up the score (10-5). They would then close the contest by limiting the Caney Creek Crew to only 3 hits the rest of the way.

At the plate, Ferrell’s 2 hits and Mullins’ 2 RBIs led the club.

On the mound, Chase Conley suffered a tough loss. He went 2.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 7 earned runs while striking out 2.

The visitors took the hitting battle, 15-8, and committed the game’s only 2 errors.

Game 2

Alice Lloyd-0; BSC-5

The Eagles were held to only 4 hits as they dropped the second game.

The guests stuck first as they used a solo blast to produce a quick run (1-0). They then added two more in the third on a couple of hits (3-0), plus an insurance run in the fourth on a long sacrifice fly (4-0).

The Eagles remained hitless until the fourth when Madden (2B) stroked a double. However, he was left stranded on base. Jacob Lovell (DH) then singled in the next inning, but the rally fizzled out.

In the sixth, 2 ALC singles from Ferrell and Mullins looked promising, but the big hit to drive them in could not be found.

Eventually, in the seventh, BSC blasted a homer for an extra run. Their pitching then slammed the door shut to seal the deal.

At the plate, Alice Lloyd was outhit 8-4. Each club committed 1 error.

On the mound, Dawson Beckett suffered a disappointing loss. He went 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs with 3 K’s.
