Rio Grande, OH: The Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles traveled to the Buckeye state on Wednesday, December 30 to play just their third game of the season. In a River States Conference showdown with the Lady Red Storm of Rio Grande University, the host squad prevailed, 108-90.
The start of the game saw the Caney Creek squad jump out well and lead 16-10. ALC held the advantage until two late buckets by Rio put them on top 29-27 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the hosts kept up their hot shooting while the Lady Eagles cooled off. Due to a 25-16 scoring edge, the home club would take a 54-43 advantage going into the dressing room.
In the third stanza, the Lady Red Storm would put the game in their pocket as they rammed in 31 big points. The Ohio squad led 85-61 at period’s end.
In the final quarter, the Lady Eagles fought back with 29 points, but the deficit was simply too great to overcome.
For Alice Lloyd (2-1), five players would reach double-figures. They were led on the day by senior guards Haley Hall and Ali May, as both finished with 16 points. Senior center Alex Clifton and sophomore guard Hanna Kash tied with 13 points each while senior forward Shelby Davis contributed 12 points. Sophomore center Emma Maggard paced the club with 6 rebounds while Kash led the way with 4 assists and 4 steals. Senior Bailee Brainard and freshman Madison Thompson both recorded 3 blocks.
ALC shot 38.6% (27-70) from the field and 37.5% (9-24) from long range. They would finish at 79.4% (27-34) from the charity stripe. Additionally, they registered 39 rebounds, 16 assists, and 12 steals.
RGU (5-6) was led by Avery Harper with 23 points. Her club connected on 49.4% (38-77) from the field and 34.8 % (8-23) from long range. At the foul line, they went 74.7 % (24-33). They also had 53 rebounds, 29 assists, and 9 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 9th, when they travel to Toccoa Falls, Georgia, for a 12 pm tipoff.
