Like several members of ALC’s faculty and staff, Mrs. Dana Dotson is an alumna of Alice Lloyd College. She graduated in December 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After teaching preschool and elementary students, Mrs. Dotson decided to return to ALC as a staff member in order to serve in a different educational capacity. Mrs. Dana Dotson has served Alice Lloyd College for over a decade. She began her career at ALC as Assistant Registrar in 2008 and has held the title of Registrar since 2014. She has had an immeasurable impact on all the students that walk into her office.

Mrs. Dotson can fondly recall several memories during her time in the Registrar’s Office. She says that she will always treasure stories shared with her by the former Registrar, Thelmarie Thornsberry. She also often comes across old letters written by Mrs. Lloyd and Miss June in the office. However, Mrs. Dotson claims that the most rewarding part of her job is assisting students in designing an educational path that best fits their desired career. “I enjoy seeing our graduates walk across the commencement stage to receive their degrees. I know how hard they have worked, the obstacles they have overcome, and how much they have accomplished,” she says.

Mrs. Dotson’s support for the students of Alice Lloyd College doesn’t end after graduation – she works diligently to stay updated on their accomplishments as alumni. “We follow them from the time they arrive and continue to follow them when they leave. We truly care about our alumni and want them to succeed,” says Mrs. Dotson.

In addition to a strong academic curriculum, Mrs. Dotson believes, “[Alice Lloyd College is unique because] our students also become part of our family.” Mrs. Dotson has three children of her own – Matthew, Emily, and Brooke – that she says are all flourishing at their own colleges. She has always encouraged them to strive for success and believes that being active on campus is a key to that. Because of this, Matt now serves as a life group leader and Resident Advisor, Emily completes additional work study hours, and Brooke is a member of the archery team.

Likewise, Mrs. Dotson encourages students at Alice Lloyd College to challenge themselves both socially and academically. She freely gives advice, saying, “When a student comes to my office for advice, I will give them the same advice I would if they were my own children: college is an investment and you will get out of it what you put into it.” At ALC, not only do the faculty members have a positive influence on the students, but the staff members do too. Mrs. Dana Dotson is one of the many staff members who are invested in preparing, guiding, and assisting the future leaders of Appalachia.
