MIDWAY, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles concluded the regular season on February 22nd in a River States Conference West Division showdown with top-seeded Midway University. The visitors hung tough early before an MU blitz allowed them to come back. They eventually put the contest out of reach, 95-79.
In the first period, ALC got off to a good start and led 11-5 in the first five minutes. However, MU closed the half on a 21-6 run to lead after ten minutes, 26-17.
In the second quarter, the squads traded hoops as Midway only won the quarter by two points (19-17). Still, the hosts would lead 45-34 at intermission.
The third period saw ALC lose ground. However, a late flurry would see them trail 71-56 entering the final ten minutes.
In the last quarter, the Caney Creek faithful witnessed junior center Alexandria Clifton take over the game and score 17 consecutive points inside the paint to help her squad attempt a comeback. Unfortunately, the deficit was simply too much to overcome as the home club held on for the win.
For ALC (12-15,4-12 RSC), Clifton led the way with a season-high 22 points. Junior guard Haley Hall added 13 while freshman guard Jasmine Eley and senior guard Katie Moore also reached double-figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Moore led the way with 4 assists while Clifton grabbed 7 rebounds. The senior duo of forwards Makayla Akers and Jayla Spurlock also snared 6 and 5 rebounds on the night.
The Eagles shot 42.6% (23-54) from the floor and 41.7% (5-12) from downtown. They sank 77.8% (28-36) from the foul line and nabbed 39 rebounds. They added 7 assists, and 4 steals.
Midway (22-8,9-7 RSC), was led on the night by Leisa Butler with 24 points. Her squad shot 45.3% (29-64) from the field and 45.5% (10-22) from deep. They finished at 87.1% (27-31) from the charity stripe. They added 34 rebounds, 24 assists, and 10 steals.
ALC next returns to the hardwood when they host the NCCAA Mideast-Regional Women’s Tournament. The dates and field will be announced shortly.
