Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team played host to the Asbury University Lady Eagles on Saturday, February 15th. The following are recaps from the double-header.
GAME 1
ALC – 2 | AU – 1
The first game was an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel as neither club could score. Lady Eagle Lyndsey Adkins singled in the opening inning but was left stranded on base
The game remained knotted at 0-0 as Asbury only hit two singles through the first five innings. Finally, the visitors broke through in the top of the sixth when Asbury hit a solo home-run to jump ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the same inning, Adkins gave the host team hope as she doubled with one out, her squad’s second hit of the night. Unfortunately, she was left on second as the inning came to an end. ALC then went to the final inning in desperate need of a big play. With one out, freshman Alexis Morris singled to put the tying run on base. With the crowd on their feet in anticipation, catcher Morgan Robinson stepped to the plate, hoping to keep the rally going. The first two pitches were strikes. However, the third pitch was over the middle of the plate and Robinson connected with full power. Her shot over the outfield wall gave the Lady Eagles the 2-1 victory as the home fans went wild with joy.
Junior Mckenzie Brewer was masterful on the mound as she went six innings, allowing only 2 hits. She stuck out 2 batters and walked 0. Freshman Kursten Napier came on in relief., and she retired the side in order to earn the save.
Paige Hill pitched well but suffered the tough loss for the guests.
ALC won the hitting battle 4-3.
GAME 2
AU – 18 | ALC – 6
The Lady Eagles jumped out first, but the visitors hit the ball well and earned the split with the game 2 victory.
ALC sprinted out of the gates quickly as they produced 2 runs in the opening inning on 1 single and 2 errors. Both runs were unearned. Unfortunately, the guests responded in a big way as they would unleash 5,4,6, and 3 runs over the next four innings. They uncorked six big home runs to fuel the onslaught.
ALC tried to answer with an RBI single from sophomore Abby Stambaugh in the second. Their big blow came when junior Jada Estep unleashed a huge 3 run blast in the 4th inning, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Estep had 2 hits to lead the Eagles. On the mound, Napier suffered the loss while sophomore Haley Howell tossed in relief.
AU outhit Alice Lloyd 17-6.
