Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles saw a tough second-half lead to their undoing as they fell at home to the highly regarded University of Cumberlands Lady Patriots, 79-58. The non-conference match-up took place on Saturday, November 16th.
The start of the game saw the hosts jump out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes before UC settled down and went on a 17-7 run to lead 21-19. When Lady Patriot Megan Morton hit a buzzer-beater from just inside half court, her squad led 24-19 after ten minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the two clubs played even ball. Incredibly, once again, UC beat the final horn, this time with a 25-foot bomb from guard Silvia Velosa. Her squad would take a 38-31 advantage into the dressing room. In the third stanza, the hosts went cold and Cumberlands went on a 13-3 run over the opening seven minutes to jump ahead 51-34. The guests would lead 58-43 at periods end. In the final quarter, the hosts kept up their steady play and pulled away to earn the convincing victory.
For Alice Lloyd (4-3), senior Jayla Spurlock was the only player to hit double digits, as she had 11 points. She added 2 blocks. Fellow senior Mckayla Akers contributed 9 points while junior guard Haley Hall added 7 points and led the way with 8 rebounds. She also tied sophomore guard Hanna Kash with 3 assists. Senior guard Katie Moore recorded 2 steals.
ALC shot 41.2% (21-51) from the field and a chilly 20.8 % (5-24) from long range. They would finish at 78.6% (11-14) from the charity stripe. Additionally, they registered 34 rebounds, 13 assists, and 3 steals.
UC (7-1) was led by Vilma Covane with 19 points. Her club connected on 43.1% (31-72) from the field and 38.9 % (7-18) from long range. At the foul line, they went 10-20 for 50%. They also had 34 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action this Saturday the 23rd when they travel to Georgetown College at 2:00 pm.
