Winchester, KY: The Alice Lloyd women’s and men’s cross-country teams traveled to Winchester (KY) on Tuesday, September 11th to compete in the Run for the Water Barrel Meet held at Lykins Park. The weather was exceptionally nice but hot for both races.
A total of 29 women’s runners and 26 men’s runner’s representing three colleges comprised the field for the 4K (2.49 mile) women’s race and 5K (3.1 miles) men’s race.
In the women’s meet, the Lady Eagles battled Asbury University and Kentucky State University The score was tight, but Asbury edged out the Eagles for first place overall.
For the event, the Lady Eagles were led by the freshman Carlee Salyers. The freshman blazed her way through the trail to finish in an impressive time of 16:20, good enough for first place overall. She defeated her closest challenger by 51 seconds.
Fellow freshman Cara Acey finished 6th, in a solid time of 18:10. She was followed by junior Morgan Arthur (19:01), senior Rachel McCoy (19:02), and freshman Lauren Bryant (19:14).
McCoy, the leading returner from last seasons squad, was finally able to run after dealing with injuries all pre-season.
Sophomores Hannah Bryant (20:14), Abigail Webb (21:01), and Nicole McMurray (23:45) each gave a good account of themselves as well.
In the men’s event, the Eagles ran a spirted race against Asbury University and Kentucky State University and garnered a close third place finish.
For the meet, ALC was paced by sophomore Alex Lewis in sixth place (18:05). Freshmen Jeremy Benjamin (19:35) and sophomore Ty Reagan (20:04) were the next two finishers, while freshmen Austin Lee (21:22), Preston Mullins (21:33) and Bryson Sargent (21:43) pushed hard till the very end.
The next meet will be Saturday, September 21st. Both squads will race at Rio Grande (OH) in the Patty Forgey Invitational. The race begins at 12:30pm.
