PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles and Eagles Tennis squads opened the 2017 tennis season on Saturday as they faced the University of Pikeville Bears. The women preceded that contest by playing a River States Conference match against the Carlow Celtics. Below are winners from each match.

Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles -2; Carlow-7

The Lady Eagles opened the campaign as they battled a very strong Carlow Celtics (PA) squad before falling 7-2.

For ALC in singles play, the highlight came from Ashley Cornett while the double highlight of the event came courtesy of Kennedi Damron and Ashley Cornett.

Singles

# 2 Ashley Cornett was victorious in her singles match in a contest that was played with grit and determination by both combatants: 7-6 (6-5), 4-6, 11-9.

Doubles

#1 Kennedi Damron and Ashley Cornett won their doubles match: 9-7, 6-2.

The other Lady Eagles played hard but unfortunately came up short in their contests.

Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles-6; UPIKE-3

The women’s team opened the contest in solid fashion and used their early momentum to earn a 6-3 match victory over the University of Pikeville Lady Bears.

In singles play, highlight wins for the Lady Eagles came from Ashley Cornett, Megan Hall, and Peyton Brown who each each won their individual match in straight sets. The Lady Eagles received 3 forfeitures on the day as well, which clinched the match in the win column. The club also received steady play from Kennedi Damron and Montana Cheek who hung tough before falling.

When asked about the day as a whole, Lady Eagle Coach Mary Turner was happy with her clubs progress, “We are really excited about the upcoming season and are working harder than ever before. I am really proud of my girls and the way they battled. We will continue to give our best effort.”

Singles

# 2 Ashley Cornett (ALC) def. Bryanna Schroers (UPIKE) 6-0, 6-2

# 3 Megan Hall (ALC) def. Emma Wonn (UPIKE) 6-0, 6-0

# 4 Peyton Brown (ALC) def. Kim Hammond (UPIKE) 6-0, 7-5

The Lady Eagles next match is scheduled for March 26 against Midway University.

Alice Lloyd Eagles-0; UPIKE-9

The men’s team opened their season against a strong UPIKE squad. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles dropped a 9-0 decision.

In overall play, participants for the Eagles were Dakota Boggs, Kaleb Huber, David Cavins, Tyler Kilburn, Perry Franklin and Daniel Guzman. Guzman emerged victorious in one of his early games before falling in the overall match.

Despite the setback, the young Eagles showed a lot of fight. Coach Dustin Turner exclaimed, “We are fighting hard and the men gave a solid effort. We will keep working to improve and become the best squad we can in the River States Conference and NCCAA.”

The team will look to bounce back in their next match scheduled for March 26 against Midway University.
