On Friday, October 3, 2014, the Alice Lloyd College Women’s Volleyball team celebrated their seniors, outside hitter Shayla Brinegar (Irvine, KY) and Katie McFarland (Church Hill, TN). The Lady Eagles switched things up and replaced libero Delaney Pritchard with outside hitter Katie McFarland, who started her career at ALC playing libero. McFarland is also the program’s first four-year graduate. The line-up was very successful as the team found victory against Hiwassee College over five hard-fought sets.
Sophomore Macy Allen once again led the team with 16 kills. Freshman Savannah Sizemore was close behind with 14. Sizemore also recorded 4 service aces and 1 solo block. Senior libero Katie McFarland stepped up for the Lady Eagles and recorded an outstanding 32 digs. McFarland’s near perfect passing helped sophomore setter Courtney Hodge record 30 assists. Junior Delaney Pritchard settled into her new role and recorded 13 digs. The Lady Eagles received support from senior Shayla Brinegar as she recorded 9 kills, 2 service aces, and 9 digs. Freshman Lakin Adams and junior Sarrah Huber followed with 5 and 4 kills respectively. Katie McFarland also recorded 2 kills.
The set scores were 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 13-25, and 15-9.
When asked about the seniors, Coach Wilson said “Katie McFarland and Shayla Brinegar are two people that come to mind when I think of leaders. Both of these young ladies have shown great leadership abilities on and off the court and will be greatly missed. They both are among the team leaders in several important statistical categories but their value to our team is more than the stats they accumulate. Katie and Shayla are so important to our school and volleyball team and they are certainly going to be missed. I have enjoyed coaching both Katie and Shayla and I know that they will be very successful in life with their future endeavors.”
