PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – Alice Lloyd College student–athletes, along with various campus organizations, brought an abundance of smiles to many area children this Halloween as they hosted the fourth annual “Trunk or Treat” in Pippa Passes. The event took place on October 31st from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
ALC’s Dean of Students and head baseball coach, Scott Cornett, helped organize the festivities. “Our goal in planning this is to get all of our student groups, clubs, organizations, and athletes, involved in a community project,” he said. “We also wanted to give our young men and women the opportunity to give a little something back to the region that has been so supportive of us.”
In “Trunk or Treat,” groups of college students bring their vehicles to various areas on campus with the trunks stuffed full of tasty treats that the little ghosts, goblins, superheroes, and princesses will love. When the children come by, the students take time to talk to each of them and comment on the kids’ costumes. Many of the ALC students also dress the part, which helps add to the fun factor.
Gary D. Stepp, ALC’s Director of Athletics, added, “I was extremely pleased with the response from our college students. It is encouraging to see how well our student-athletes embrace the ‘Champions of Character’ philosophy, and they went above and beyond what we expected. We plan on making this a mainstay on our campus, because the turnout is always excellent. Our students really love meeting the children, and our students receive much more than they give from participating.”
Mrs. Deborah Holbrook brought her daughter, Riele, and Riele‘s best friend, Elisabeth, to the event.
“Trunk or Treat on ALC’s campus is a fun and safe event for the kids,” Holbrook said. “It gives them time to socialize with their friends outside of school. The College’s students, faculty, and staff, and members of the community who give out candy and dress up, have just as much fun as the children.”
Mrs. Holbrook added, ”It reminds me of an old-fashioned Halloween. Children walk down the street safely and are greeted by their friends, while parents visit with one another and enjoy a sense of community.”
