The June Buchanan School held its annual spelling bee only a few weeks ago in which 8th-grader Hunter Hylton was the school’s champion speller. Hunter advanced on to the Middle School Spelling Bee held in Knott County on February 17th at Knott County Central High School.

On Saturday, February 4th, The June Buchanan Middle School Academic Team was back in action at the Regional Governor’s Cup Competition, held at Cordia Elementary. Students competed against students from 14 other schools in both team and individual events. Individual students taking home subject awards were:

The June Buchanan School’s High School Academic Team competed in their District Tournament at Letcher County Central on Saturday, January 28, and won several notable awards. The academic team will be competing in the regional tournament at Powell County High School on Saturday, February 18th.

The 25th annual WYMT Mountain Classic held this January has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships over the years. Of 142 high school seniors, JBS seniors Sadie Haigler, Bridgett Howard, and Kolby Slone received 3 of those scholarships worth $1000 each to provide for college expenses.
