American women made many contributions in World War II.  Some even joined the fight before America officially went to war.  In the summer of 1941, American aviator Jacqueline Cochran flew a bomber to England and studied how English women pilots were aiding the war effort.  The next year, Cochran led a group of American women pilots to England where they joined the British Air Transport Auxiliary, a branch of the Royal Air Force.  These twenty-five women were some of the first Americans to join the fight against Nazi Germany. Their success paved the way for other women pilots wishing to join the war effort.
