On Saturday, September 20, 2005, the Alice Lloyd College Hiking Club ventured out for its first trip of the semester to the Red River Gorge. Of the club’s nine members, five students participated, along with faculty sponsor Dr. Katrina Slone.
The trip was organized by ALC third year student, Dylan Pierce, who led the group to Hanson’s Point, a scenic overlook that provides a sweeping view of the Red River Gorge. The five-mile round-trip hike gave students the chance to learn about the region’s unique ecology as they paused to discuss different types of flora and fauna along the trail. On the return trip, Pierce quizzed members to test their knowledge and reinforce what they had learned.
“Red River Gorge is one of the best places to hike, explore, and learn about nature. It’s a very popular area with unlimited resources. It was nice for everyone to clear their minds from schoolwork and be in the moment in God’s creation,” said Dylan.
The Hiking Club plans to host one trip per month throughout the school year, giving students regular opportunities to explore Kentucky’s natural beauty, stay active, and enjoy fellowship outside the classroom.
