Extracurricular Activities

The June Buchanan School offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities for all students from kindergarten through high school. These activities include academically-based teams and organizations, as well as various athletic teams. We strive to produce well-rounded individuals, and our extracurricular activities program is an amazing asset to our students.Sports and activities are offered as interest is shown.

The June Buchanan School offers students in grades 2-12 the opportunity to be a part of the Academic Team. Our students compete in Kentucky Association for Academic Competition-sanctioned events, including Governor’s Cup, 6th Grade Showcase, and JV Challenge. The coaches for all three Academic Teams (Elementary, Middle, and High School) are Mrs. Cindy Hall and Ms. Natalie Gibson.

The Arts and Cultural Enrichment Club is dedicated to students who have an interest in the arts, whether it’s music of any kind, theatre, dance, or the visual arts. It is considered an honors club at JBS, so there are three requirements:

  1. You enjoy the arts and participate as an esteemed ACE member.
  2. You maintain a 3.3 GPA (checked at the end of each nine weeks).
  3. You attend ACE meetings and enrichment activities.

In its inaugural year (2010), the ACE Club visited the Cincinnati Art Museum, watched the Broadway show Frankenstein, traveled to the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, watched the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, toured Nashville’s Parthenon replica, and visited Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, NC. Students have also enjoyed the Broadway Across America series. The club has celebrated Christmas in New York City, saw the Broadway shows Spider-Man, Tarzan, and Beauty and the Beast, they’ve also visited the St. James Court Art Show in Louisville, as well as Barter Theatre in nearby Abingdon, VA. The club has also visited Niagra Falls and saw The Lion King on Broadway in New York City. Recently, the club has been attempting to expand its adventures to Europe by fundraising for a trip to London and Paris.

Students at The June Buchanan School are given the opportunity to audition for roles in all of Alice Lloyd College’s Eagle Theatre productions. ALC Eagle Theatre provides students with exciting opportunities to enrich their communication and public relations skills. Each spring Eagle Theatre presents a major production. The plays allow students to participate in the collaborative and creative processes of educational theatre. All aspects of theatre are emphasized to provide students with the opportunity to experience the production process firsthand. Areas of emphasis include performance, costume, make-up, sound, set, and lighting design; scenic and properties construction; stage management; marketing and promotion; and educational outreach. Students audition for positions/roles each semester and are selected by the Director/Faculty Advisor. Our students have starred in productions of Alice in Wonderland, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Antigone,The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and others.

Eagle Theatre has ties to various theatre organizations such as: the Kentucky Theatre Association, the Southeastern Theatre Conference, and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, providing students the opportunity to watch and support other educational and professional theatre programs.

June Buchanan School students can participate in speech competitions throughout the year. While small in number, the squads have had continual success over the years, with multiple students competing at the state level.
