FLORENCE, KY

Midway now advances to the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship as the RSC’s automatic team qualifier. The national tournament is May 17-20 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Indiana University East took runner-up team honors, and Indiana University Kokomo placed third. The top three teams remained the same after each round. IU East and IU Kokomo both had their best rounds on Tuesday shooting 300 and 301 on the final day, respectively.

Out of 12 teams that participated, the Alice Lloyd Eagles (Ky.) finished in 11th position.

61 individuals took to the links for the three-day event. For ALC, they were led by Mason Compton. His combined three-day total of 243 tied him for the 26th position. After a rough start, his final round score of 75 tied for the sixth-best of the day.

In addition, Korey Hanson (258), Hayden Halbert (281), and Matthew Fitch (297) also represented the Eagles.

Also named was the RSC Men’s Golf Champions of Character Team. One member from each school was nominated by their coach for best displaying the five-character values of the NAIA: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. For Alice Lloyd College (KY), Korey Hanson received this award.

The golf course was in excellent condition, especially for a March event. The hospitality of the Richmond community was outstanding.

In the first round, Cleveland State Community College Cougars shot an 11 over 291 to take an 11 stroke lead over IU East from Richmond, Indiana, led by Isaac Meador, whose first round 69 was the only under-par round in the tournament. Cougars followed up their 291 with a 294 to win the event by 14 shots over IU East. Meador won the individual championship in a playoff with teammate Dalton Sutton.

Mount St. Joseph of Cincinnati shot 360 in the first round of the women’s tournament to take a 13 stroke lead over UPike. UPike roared back in the second round with a 330 to win the tournament by 15 strokes. UPike standout Boo Newsome shot 80 in the first round and 72 in the second round to win the individual championship by 14 strokes over fellow Bear Sophia Beverly.

Teams from Bryan College, Truett-McConnell University, Bob Jones University, Roane State CC, Walters State CC, and Cleveland State CC joined ALC for the tournament. 

Walters State won the men’s tournament in a thrilling 3-hole playoff with Cleveland State. Bob Jones finished one stroke out of the playoff. Hunter Hartman of Walters State was the medalist for the men shooting 74/71 for 145 and a 1 stroke win.

Mason Compton led the Eagle golfers once again. He fired a 73 in the first round to stand in second place and followed that up in the second round with a 77. His total score of 150 was good enough to earn him 9th place out of 48 participants.

Oakland City, IN

Asbury University won the tournament to qualify for the NCCAA National Tournament as the Mideast Region Champion. Nate Neal of Oakland City University qualified for the national tournament as the low individual player, not on the winning team.

For the event, ALC golfers shot 340/332. This is a good score for a young team on what was a very challenging course. On tee to green, the squad was excellent, but the slow bumpy greens proved a tough challenge.

From an individual standpoint, Mason Compton led Eagle golfers shooting 79/81 for 160 and 10th place, while Korey Hanson fired 84/85 for 169 and 14th place. Additionally, Dylan Fitch shot 90/81 for 15th place, Wyatt Crisp shot 87/85 for 16th place, and Matthew Fitch shot 94/92 good for 17th place.

Next up is the UPike Fall Invitational at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg.

Prestonsburg, KY

Roane State CC, Tennessee won the championship shooting 304/290 for a two-round total of 594 and a 2 shot win over UPike. Micah Strangebye of Kentucky State was the men’s medalist with a 5 under par 139 and a 3 shot win over Alice Lloyd sophomore golfer Mason Compton. For the event, the Pippa Passes crew shot 637 as a team and finished tied for 5th in a 7-team field.

Also, for Alice Lloyd, freshman Dylan Fitch shot 153 to place 11^th, while senior Korey Hanson shot 164 to finish 30th.

Other finishers included: senior Wyatt Crisp (168 to finish 36^th), freshman Matthew Fitch (179 to finish 42^nd), senior Matthew Henson (191 to finish 43^rd), freshman Carson Hanson (192 to finish 44^th), and junior Jaden Gay (205 to finish 46^th).

Next up for the Eagles golf team is the NCCAA Mideast regional in Montgomery, Indiana on September 20/21.

In the season-opening IU East Fall Invitational, held in Richmond, Indiana, at the Highland Lake Golf Course, the sophomore from Prestonsburg (KY) fired a two-round total of 151.

Compton’s final score was good enough to help him finish in 13^th place overall and helped ALC finish 6^th

Richmond, IN

Over the two-day affair, ALC would wind up shooting 339/336 for a total score of 675. This result placed the Eagles 6th of 7 competing squads.

On an individual basis, sophomore Mason Compton paved the way as he fired a 74/77 to finish tied for 13th.  He was followed by freshman Dylan Fitch, who shot an 87/82 for 169 to finish 30^th, a solid result for his first tournament.

In addition, senior Korey Hanson shot 87/87 to finish tied for 34th. Freshman Carson Hanson (91/90) ended up with a score of 181 (Tie 36), while senior Matthew Henson shot 93/97 for 190 and finished tied for 37th.

Golf season is about to be in full “swing” as the ALC Eagles golf club team prepares for what hopes to be a promising exhibition.

Experience is important on any team and the Eagles return some solid pieces from last year’s squad which advanced to the NCCAA National Championships.

Coach Robert Hamilton is pleased to have Mason Compton back in Pippa Passes for another season. “Compton is very good. Our goal for him is to compete for championships throughout the season.”

In addition to Compton, Korey Hanson returns to bring stability to the squad. However, they will be joined by some new faces. “We have 3 promising freshmen in Dylan Fitch, Matt Fitch, and Carson Hanson,” stated the coach. This could result in a well-rounded club to bring to golf matches for the club.

The veteran mentor feels there is a lot of potential within the squad this year. “Our team goal is also to compete for championships, but there is some development needed and we will see how long that takes.” The pieces are unquestionably there for this group to do big things this year. The only real question is, can they put it altogether?

Coach Hamilton also threw light on the fact that his team would represent their communities and this area very well. He explained the team is comprised solely of student-athletes from the Eastern Kentucky region with players from Martin County, Floyd County, Clay County, and Pike County forming the entire squad. “I expect our players to represent themselves in a manner that is a credit to our community.” This explanation of good character and expectations along with a winning mentality could be an extremely good sign that yet another program is headed in the right direction on the Alice Lloyd campus.

The new season will kick off for ALC at the IU East Invitational in Richmond, Indiana on September 3rd and 4th.

FLORENCE, Ind

Midway (Ky.) University senior Logan Conn took medalist honors.

For the event, Alice Lloyd College (KY) shot a combined score of 1156, to finish in 12^th position. Individually, the Eagles were paced by Mason Compton, who shot a three-day score of 240. He finished in a tie for the 27^th.

The RSC Men’s Golf First & Second Teams were comprised of five players on each list. Scores from the three rounds this week and the two rounds from the RSC Fall Preview were used to determine the squads. 

Also named was the RSC Men’s Golf Champions of Character Team. Nominated by their head coach, one member of each team was recognized for best displaying the NAIA’s five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. For ALC, Matthew Henson was selected for this award.

At the ALC Spring Invitational at Battlefield Golf Course in Richmond, Kentucky, nine teams, and 53 individuals competed on the men’s side.

For the event, Compton shot 70/73 for a two-day total of 143. This placement enabled him to finish tied for 5th, which gave him all-tournament honors.
