He didn’t like to read, and he says this caused him not to learn as well as he should have. However, Mr. Stanczak’s life took him on a journey that would teach him the necessity of a quality education and the value of hard work.

Now retired, Mr. Stanczak enjoys spending time with his four children while working on his newfound interest: writing. Although he often says he wasn’t a good student, he acknowledges he always did well in his writing classes. So far, Mr. Stanczak has written and published four novels and is wrapping up his fifth. A huge proponent of Alice Lloyd College, Mr. Stanczak has graciously decided the profits from his most recent publication, America, of Thee I Sing, and his upcoming book, Bare Knuckles Justice, should go to ALC.

When Mr. Stanczak first learned about Alice Lloyd College, he was fascinated with its story and identified with our mission. Despite not enjoying school, Mr. Stanczak made good grades and worked his way to Bradley University, where he attended for a semester before joining the United States Army. He said it was during his time in the army that he developed his values of hard work and servant leadership and discovered the importance of a quality education.

After his leaving the service, Mr. Stanczak attended Lake Forest College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Management. His degree helped him take on a large role at his job with Johnson Motors Division of Outboard Marine Corporation. Mr. Stanczak believes that ALC teaches the importance of a strong work ethic and servant leadership skills like he learned while serving our country and that the College provides Appalachian students with a quality education like the one that has been crucial to his success.

As he continued to learn about the College’s mission to provide affordable, high-quality education to deserving young people, Mr. Stanczak began supporting the College and the June Buchanan School. Mr. Stanczak has visited the College twice and hopes to visit campus again this fall. Mr. Stanczak is impressed by the College’s Student Work Program. He says the program is a “win-win” for students as it not only helps pay for their education and keeps the College running smoothly, but it also teaches them valuable work skills that they will use after graduation. He believes ALC is a “haven” and “jewel” in a primitive area of Eastern Kentucky that’s “a place where students can find themselves and attain their goals.”

Mr. Stanczak’s favorite part of visiting Alice Lloyd is watching the students interact. “The students are all respectful students and it makes for a magical atmosphere at Alice Lloyd College. It’s a jewel in the wilderness.” He says the upkeep of the campus’ facilities and grounds is astonishing. The beautiful campus and hard work of the student leaders the College is creating is a testament to the vision of the College’s founders and their mission that is still thriving over 100 years later.

Mr. Stanczak is “100% ALC” and hopes his contributions will help a student graduate from the College to become a leader for our great nation. He is always introducing Alice Lloyd College to everyone he meets in the hopes more will contribute to the quality, character-based education and work ethic that the College provides students.

The post The Importance of Education: An ALC Donor Spotlight of Mr. John Stanczak first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

After graduating from Magoffin County High School in 1984, Ralfred followed in the footsteps of his older sister, Carol Hall Scott, and chose to attend Alice Lloyd College. Knowing how much he enjoyed math and auto mechanics classes in high school, Ralfred pursued a bachelor’s degree in Math/Physical Science Secondary Education.

After graduating from Alice Lloyd College in 1988, Ralfred earned an MS in Vocational Education Supervision and Administration from Morehead State University. He later began his career as a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Ashland Community & Technical College. Ralfred recently celebrated 30 years of service in the Kentucky Community College System.

In addition to his love of teaching, Ralfred is a longtime car enthusiast. He enjoys attending car shows and plans to display his prized Mustang Bullitt this year. Ralfred is also a golfer and motorcyclist.

Ralfred and his wife, Christy, have called Ashland their home for many years. This year, they have found themselves “empty nesters”, as their son, Sawyer, graduated from high school in May and has begun a six-year contract with the U.S. Navy.

Ralfred believes he owes everything to Alice Lloyd College regarding his life and career, saying, “I would have never made it into my chosen profession without ALC. I could not afford college, so I would most likely have been doing carpentry work for my father.”

As a student, Ralfred performed his work study assignment in the chemistry department. It was in this position, that he learned how to properly set up lab experiments. Ralfred credits the experience he received in the Student Work Program as a primary factor for success in his life. “My personality is all mine, not to be duplicated,” he says, “but my professionalism is owed to ALC where I learned how to act and dress in a professional atmosphere.”

Ralfred is a proud alumnus of Alice Lloyd College. He is committed to remaining connected to the school and he and his wife, Christy, make every effort to return to campus for alumni events such as Appalachia Day Homecoming. It is sometimes difficult to appreciate what is right in front of you, and Ralfred recognizes that his appreciation for all he received at ALC has increased through the years.

Professor Ralfred Hall has this advice for ALC students, “Study hard and study often. The rest of your life depends on your short time spent at ALC.”

The post Ralfred Hall: Grateful for ALC first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

by Dalton McCown, Student Contributor

Service to others is a major part of the Purpose Road Philosophy. The Honorable James Bradberry has certainly lived a life of service to his family, church, military, and community. Mr. Bradberry is originally from Chicago, Illinois, and remained in the northern United States until finishing his undergraduate education at the University of Wisconsin.

After graduation, Mr. Bradberry then went on to the University of Virginia to attend law school. He later joined the armed forces and spent his time serving as a lawyer stationed in Germany. After his duty in the armed forces, he returned home and went into private practice in Virginia for 20 years. In 1991, he took the bench as a magistrate judge where he presided until his retirement.

Now retired, Mr. Bradberry looks back on how he heard about Alice Lloyd College and what compelled him to give his support. He says, “I have family from Appalachia, and I was so impressed with the way Alice Lloyd College does things and that students are guaranteed an education.” ALC is the only college to recruit students primarily from the Central Appalachian region who may not be able to attend college otherwise. The students selected from a 108-county service area are awarded the Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship which fully covers tuition. The scholarship allows students to pay no out-of-pocket costs for tuition.

Mr. Bradberry states, “I have also been impressed with what the students are able to do when they go off to graduate school. They gather some impressive opportunities and that’s because of the work they do at Alice Lloyd College.” In fact, over 90 percent of students in recent years have been accepted into graduate school or have been employed within 10 months of graduation. Alice Lloyd College is well known for its graduate and professional school assistance through The Caney Scholars Program, the only one of its kind in the nation.

Mr. Bradberry cited his appreciation for the mentoring relationships originating here at the college. “The students at Alice Lloyd College are in an environment in which it is in the ability of the faculty and staff to perhaps influence their behavior in a more positive way than you will frequently see. Not everyone in a large university has that opportunity and that’s one of the marvelous things about Alice Lloyd College. That makes a huge difference.” The majority of faculty and staff live on the campus, creating a rare environment where students, staff, and faculty interact and use the same spaces simultaneously. It is this kind of faculty and staff interaction that gives ALC its close-knit community feel.

Currently, Mr. Bradberry stays active in his church in both participance and governance and enjoys the company of his two children and four grandchildren. He is immensely proud of his grandchildren, who are all pursuing their own paths of service through undergraduate education at various institutions. He occasionally enjoys skeet shooting and is incredibly proud to be a supporter of Alice Lloyd College. The Honorable Mr. James Bradberry’s continued support is an abundant blessing to Alice Lloyd College and to the future Appalachian students who will walk the Purpose Road.

The post Donor Spotlight: Honorable James Bradberry first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

Whitesburg, KY native and ALC friend, Dr. Shelba Proffitt, is one of the extraordinary people behind space defense for the United States of America. Dr. Proffitt began her career as a member of the Von Braun Space Team in Huntsville, Alabama, and went on to work 50 years on space and defense programs. However, before Dr. Proffitt was using her education to help put a man on the moon and defend America, she attended a two-room schoolhouse in Isom, Kentucky, just a few miles from Alice Lloyd College.

“I had wonderful and inspiring teachers, as well as a family who understood the value of education. My grandmother always said ‘Anything anyone else can do, you can do.’ That reminder came in handy when I had to study quantum physics.”

Dr. Shelba Proffitt went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics from Centre College. In 2019, the College selected only 25 alumni to honor for their bicentennial celebrations, and Dr. Proffitt was one of those chosen. She said that often she was the only girl in her science classes but everyone was very encouraging; she never felt discriminated against either in school or her long professional career.

After graduation, Dr. Proffitt moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where she joined the Van Braun Space Project. She fell in love with space technology and attended night school to study aerospace engineering. She subsequently obtained a Masters and Ph.D. in Management of Science and Technology. Dr. Proffitt joined the Army’s Air, Space, and Missile Defense program where she helped develop the technologies for missile defense of the United States. She became the Program Manager for the National Space and Missile Defense Program and during her five years in this position, she took the program from research and development to production and fielding.

Dr. Proffitt credits her education, work ethic and attitude as reasons for her success and sees a little bit of herself in the students at Alice Lloyd College. She says, “I really admire the students at Alice Lloyd. I know that they will make major contributions to their families, Eastern Kentucky, and their country.”

During her career, Dr. Proffitt has interfaced with the Secretary of Defense, the Department of the Army, NASA, international leaders, and the aerospace industry. She has published over 25 technical papers, holds two patents, was awarded a Senior Executive Service Presidential Rank, and in 1996, she was awarded second place for Outstanding Women in the Department of the Army. She was also given the Women in Science and Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Proffitt was chosen by National Space Club for the Engineer of the Year in 1999. In 2004, she was inducted into the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame and in 2005, she was inducted into the Air, Space, and Missile Defense Hall of Fame. Dr. Proffitt is still working as a consultant for the Department of Defense.

“Students at Alice Lloyd are creating opportunities for themselves. The work and sacrifices they are making now will allow them to change their lives, the lives of their families and their communities.”

Through the generosity of Dr. Shelba Proffitt and friends like her, students in Pippa Passes are able to pursue their education with no out-of-pocket costs for tuition. It is a blessing to keep the promise that our founder made to never turn away a qualified student due to a lack of financial resources. With each passing year, Dr. Proffitt helps us to prove that Mrs. Lloyd’s famous words, ‘The leaders are here!’ are as true today as they were over one hundred years ago.

“Kids from the mountains can do things like help a man land on the moon and create the most advanced missile defense system in the world. The right attitude with the right opportunity can create miracles, and I am glad to help continue that tradition.”

The post Donor Spotlight: Dr. Shelba Proffitt first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

There were not many modern conveniences for her to enjoy and the problems she sought to solve seemed insurmountable. However, Mrs. Lloyd was a woman with a mission, and she was someone that knew the value of a strong work ethic. It was hard work that built Alice Lloyd College, and it is a continued commitment to hard work that allows this college to continually be ranked as one of the top colleges in the nation.

Hard work, Ruth Bernau says, is something to be rewarded. “We like to support organizations that help people, help themselves. Nothing in life is free; you have to work for what you get. Alice Lloyd College teaches that in everything they do. We love the idea that students have a chance to earn a quality education regardless of their financial situation. They don’t even take any direct government funding. That’s not something you see often.”

Ted and Ruth Bernau, of the Bernau Family Foundation, have been friends of Alice Lloyd College since 2004. The Foundation board is composed of Ruth and Ted along with other immediate family members. Their daughter, Wendi Bernau, is officially in charge of running the organization, which supports groups that promote the Biblical world view in education, apprenticeship, and politics in a fiscally responsible way.

For the past 15 years, the Foundation has proudly supported our mission by helping us guarantee tuition to students in the Appalachian region, supporting K-12 students at the June Buchanan School, as well as donating to the Caney Scholars Program, which helps graduates from Alice Lloyd College attend graduate or professional school. Did you know we are the only college to financially support our graduates as they go on to further their education?

In addition to the strong work ethic that ALC instills in its students, Ted and Ruth wholly support the Judeo-Christian principles upon which the College was founded.

“We were impressed with how Alice Lloyd College endorses Christian values, and how the institution is not afraid to stand up for those values, especially in today’s world. We try to live by God’s word every day and are glad to see a place where that is encouraged.”

Originally from New Jersey, Ruth and Ted now reside in Virginia. They have four children and a host of grandchildren scattered throughout the country. A large family and a network of friends means lots of travel throughout the year, which the couple enjoys almost like a hobby. During their travels last year, the couple had a chance to visit Pippa Passes and were impressed with the realistic world view of our students, as well as the beautiful campus grounds and new campus projects. They plan to return in the next year for another visit, as the work continues.

“The entrepreneurial spirit is what will ultimately get rid of social problems like poverty and the lack of education. One of the biggest problems in our society is that we just give people stuff without making them work for it and think that will make a difference. You have to allow people to work for what they want or you haven’t changed anything.”

The mission of Alice Lloyd College is rooted in the dignity and life-changing effects of developing a strong work ethic. The Purpose Road Philosophy teaches students the principles needed to become independent adults and leaders in their community while giving them the tools to succeed in their personal lives and the workplace. The college itself stands as a testament to what can happen when people come together with a powerful work ethic, a Biblical world view, and a commitment to a common purpose.

“When students leave Alice Lloyd College, they are prepared for the real world. That’s what’s so impressive about them. Those kids don’t need a handout, they just need an opportunity.”

The post Donor Spotlight: Ted and Ruth Bernau first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

by Dru Walters, Student Contributor

You can tell a lot about a man from his socks. When you catch a glimpse of the socks of Mr. Benny McFarland, you’ll almost always see either Chicago Cubs or Mickey Mouse. It says a lot about his personality.

Benny took his first walk along the Purpose Road in the fall of 1982. For many years, he and his wife Betty toured Appalachia to take in the beautiful autumn scenery. A young lady gave them a tour of the campus, and they were immediately taken with the mission of the school and type of students Alice Lloyd College attracts.

“We were just planning to see the trees changing, but we ended up falling in love with this little valley in Pippa Passes. The people were so welcoming and friendly; we knew we were in a special place.”

In 2017, Benny came back to ALC’s campus and had lunch with that same young lady, 35 years later. He said it felt like he had never left. At 87 years old, Benny’s memory is as sharp as ever. If you ask where he lives, Benny will proudly tell you that he still lives in “the same old farmhouse” he was born in, right outside of Indianapolis. In 1950, Benny married his high school sweetheart, Betty Lyster. The two enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Betty passed away in 2013. Together, they have 4 kids, 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Before retirement, Benny worked for International Harvester, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery. However, his real passions have always been baseball and travel. As a huge Chicago Cubs fan, one of Benny’s prized possessions is a World Series ring from 1908. He also has one from the last time the Cubs won in 2016. Even during rough seasons, his faith never wavers, and he looks forward to the day the Cubs will sweep the World Series again.

In addition to taking in baseball, Benny still plays trivia every Monday and gets together with the guys to play cards every Tuesday. He also stays involved with Veterans’ organizations, seeking to give back a little to those who gave so much. Most notably, he is also big ALC Eagles fan and plans to bring some family and friends with him to support the ALC Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams in 2019.

Benny’s traveling buddy is now Mike, a friend of his son’s who sometimes visits ALC with him as well. He says that Mike isn’t quite the companion that Betty was, but he’s a pretty good driver, so he keeps him around. The two of them often take trips to historical sites and big cities to take in sports and entertainment. Whether it’s Hawaii, Chicago, or the sunny beaches of Florida, Benny stays on the move. In fact, he has been to Disney World 36 times with various friends and family and plans to go again next year.

Benny (blue shirt) with Women’s Basketball coach John Mills, Executive Vice President Jim Stepp, Director of Campus Relations Allison Holbrook, and Mike

“Why would I want to sit around at home? Life is meant to be lived, not wasted. Even at 87, there are so many things to see and do. I’m proud to give to ALC because the kids here are destined to do great things. It makes you feel good, you know, to help someone; especially someone who’s working hard, like the kids here.”

Benny reminds us that the mission of Alice Lloyd College is unique among other colleges in the Appalachian region and America. The full richness of life is waiting for those who make it their mission to find and experience it, and Benny sees in ALC students the same thirst for life that he has. Out of all the places he visits in his travels, Alice Lloyd College, he says, will always be his favorite.

“God brought me to Pippa Passes during my travels for a reason, the same way he brought all these students here. We all have to do what we can with the time given to us, and I plan on using every last second of mine.”

The post Donor Spotlight: Benny McFarland first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

The Lady Eagles performance and sportsmanship impressed the couple so much that they researched the College and learned about the character-based education offered at ALC. They recall feeling moved to become part of the ALC family, and recently stopped by Pippa Passes, all the way from Hideaway, Texas!

Steve and Kathleen are both graduates of Southern Methodist University. Steve received his Ph.D. from Texas Christian University. He was Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Emporia State University and Distinguished Guest Professor at Morningside College.

Since 1966, Dr. Davis has published over 300 articles, 42 textbooks, and 900 professional papers on research in Psychology, Psychology education, and various other topics in his field. He has served as the President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, and Southern Psychological Association. He is also a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and division 1 (General), 2 (Society for Teaching of Psychology), 3 (experimental), and 6 (behavioral neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Davis took early retirement from Emporia State University in 2001, which allows Kathleen and him plenty of time to travel to places like the Appalachian region. During their visit, they had the opportunity to meet multiple bright young minds and were impressed by the friendly and outgoing personalities that Alice Lloyd College students cultivate during their time on the Purpose Road. Steve and Kathleen spent their visit discussing cinema with Dr. Patrick Greene, sitting in on Dr. Steven Wilson’s Western Civilization class, and watching the women’s basketball team practice where they had the opportunity to speak with the Lady Eagles and tell them that their showing at the national tournament piqued their interest in the College.

As Americana aficionados, Steve and Kathleen collect rare teddy bears, antique cars, and vintage guitars. Steve says he has over 20 guitars, some of which are signed by historic rock and roll icons, while others are limited edition releases and a few are custom made. They even used to own a record company, and have thousands of records at their house in Hideaway, including 30 or so that Steve helped produce. Lake life in Texas sees them playing golf and maintain their car collection which includes a 1931 Ford Model A Pickup Truck, a 1964 Ford Falcon Convertible, and a Malibu SS Convertible, all restored and striking in appearance.

A foggy Tuesday morning saw them leave Pippa Passes for Stanton, Virginia, but Steve and Kathleen plan to return to the Purpose Road the next time they find themselves driving through Kentucky.

“We loved the mission of the school but never made it this direction before. We took a scenic route on the way here and it was definitely worth it,” Kathleen recalls, “It was so nice to meet a generation of young people that were so hospitable. We may be far from Texas, but we have felt right at home.”

Through Steve and Kathleen, it’s easy to see how God uses the ministry of character and the philosophy of the Purpose Road to work miracles. As the ALC family grows, so does the mission. Alice Lloyd College may be nestled deep in the foothills of Appalachia, but the philosophy of the Purpose Road touches hearts and souls coast to coast and from the highest mountain to the deepest valley.

The post Donor Spotlight: Dr. Steve and Kathleen Davis first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

While they have lived in Fairfax, Virginia, for over 38 years, together the two have traveled to more than 147 countries. Their favorite destination is India which they have visited four times, although South America, Europe, and the Far East are all of special interest. Though world travelers, Keith and Anne say that they had never met, nor spent time with, people from Appalachia until discovering Alice Lloyd College.

Keith and Anne first heard about ALC though Keith’s father, who was familiar with the College of the Ozarks, a work-study college like Alice Lloyd. Upon learning that Jerry Davis, current College of the Ozarks President, is also the former President of ALC, they became curious about this school in the very heart of the Appalachia. Keith and Anne were impressed by the uniqueness of the College, the work study model employed at ALC, and the commitment of faculty and staff to meet the critical need for education in the region.

Keith comes from a long line of chemical engineers, including his father and brother. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He then received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, where his parents had met many years prior. Anne graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York, earning a degree in English. The two met and married in New York City while Anne was beginning her career at a publishing company and Keith was beginning his career with Mobil Oil Corporation. When Mobil’s headquarters moved to Fairfax, Virginia, the couple decided it was time for them to leave the New York City area and to move to the D.C. suburbs.

Since they are both retired now, Keith and Anne have more free time to pursue their interests and change the world around them for the better. They have attended the Fairfax Baptist Church for over 30 years, during which time they have served as a host family for our very own Voices of Appalachia! Keith has been an activist in Virginia politics for over 12 years and uses his expertise in election law to fight for fair elections for everyone in Fairfax County. Anne has been president of various political organizations. Both of them have been involved in church leadership positions and activities.

Keith and Anne Damon’s motivation is to provide something that is desperately needed in this area of the country. Throughout their many travels, they maintain a commitment to helping those who are in need wherever they may be found. They say, “No out-of-pocket tuition is great and a school that expects you to work for your education is even greater.”

The post Donor Spotlight: Keith and Anne Damon first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

The partnership between Jay Ripley and Alice Lloyd College demonstrates how the Purpose Road Philosophy is embraced by those who have devoted their lives to serving others all over the United States. Mr. Ripley is the co-founder of Sequel Youth and Family Services, a company dedicated to meeting the educational needs of adjudicated delinquent boys, as well as special needs students across the country. Throughout his life, he has strived to make a difference in the lives of youths who often come from less than ideal backgrounds.

Like Mrs. Lloyd, Jay knows firsthand the potential of students who have not been granted an easy lot in life. His life and work are rooted in a strong commitment to his faith, but also in the experience of growing up in a financially distressed home in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland. Jay’s parents divorced when he was only 13, leaving his mother to care for him and his two sisters. He recalls money being scarce, and his mother struggling to work many different jobs over the years just to support them.

Jay graduated high school in 1975, and in 1979, he became the first in his family to graduate from college. He graduated from the University of Baltimore (UB) with a degree in Accounting and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara, the summer after graduation. At the present time, Jay is the only member of the University of Baltimore Foundation Board to have gone to UB on scholarships and financial aid, which he finds a testament to education being the great equalizer.

Fresh out of college, Jay took a job at Ernst & Young as a CPA. He later left to join Jiffy Lube. After starting out on the financial side of the company, Jay became Corporate Controller and helped to take the company public in 1987. In 1995, Precision Tune, which would later become Precision Auto Care, recruited him to be their President & CEO. After Jay took the company public in 1997, he left the office in 1998 to begin work on his next venture, which he would soon realize was his divine calling. In 1999, he and a former business associate founded Sequel Youth and Family Services. Though he has gotten out of the day to day operations of the company, Jay continues to serve as the Chairman of the Board.

Together, Jay and Barbara have 2 boys, 3 girls, 5 grandsons, and are expecting a granddaughter in December. Jay spent 20 years of his life as an active worship leader, and over the course of his career, he and his family have helped to found several churches. Above all, they consider their work to be part of growing God’s kingdom.

When Jay received a letter from Alice Lloyd College, he immediately recognized fellow travelers on the Purpose Road. The Purpose Road philosophy may have been developed by Mrs. Lloyd and Dr. Herbert Palmer, but in many ways, it lives in the hearts and souls of all those who know the importance of service to those around them. ALC could not be more proud to have Jay Ripley as a partner. Growing up poor, Jay has witnessed the transformative power of education and the character forming nobility of hard work. Together, we are able to provide opportunities for students who come from impoverished households, and further the mission set forth by our founder all across the Appalachian Region.

The post Donor Spotlight: Jay Ripley first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

He can remember first reading about Alice Lloyd College in the Sunday edition of the Louisville Courier-Journal and saw Ms. Lloyd’s appearance on “This is Your Life” with Ralph Edwards. After hearing the message of the school, Kenneth asserts that anyone with a heart would want to give to Alice Lloyd College. He relates to the kids who, like him, weren’t exactly born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

Kenneth was born in Illinois to two Kentucky natives in 1925. His parents decided that the price of land was too high in Illinois, so they moved back to Kentucky to buy the farm he would be raised on in 1927. His father passed away when he was only six and a half years old, but his mother remarried a gentleman from Kansas. Before being swept off to the mid-west, Kenneth spent his grade school years in a one-room schoolhouse, where he says, “We didn’t have the luxury of electricity or plumbing there… and I’m proud for people to know that.” Kenneth graduated from Baldwin High School in 1943 and went to work at Sheffield Steel until 1945.

Kenneth originally considered joining the army at this time, but life had other plans. Instead, he decided to reconnect with his Kentucky roots by taking over his Uncle’s General Store in LaRue County, Kentucky. Kenneth ran the general store for three years before deciding to return to factory work. He successfully sold the store and worked in the sour cream division of Beatrice Foods for four years afterward. After that, he took a sales job with WR Grace – Fertilizer Division where he worked until his retirement, 35+ years later.

It was in 1954 that Kenneth finally followed his heart and joined the army. He was stationed in Germany for eighteen months and was immediately married upon discharge. Kenneth can remember that he and his wife, Elizabeth, only had $500 to their names when they got married, but in his words, all they needed were “the smiles on [our] faces.”

Kenneth has given to ALC for a number of years and visited campus in 1988. He is also heavily involved in his church, and his wife, Elizabeth, was on the board of trustees at Lindsey Wilson College. While she spent her career as a secretary, Kenneth encouraged her to give that up later in life in order to stay at home and “supervise” him. He claims that he needs “constant supervision.” Elizabeth passed in December of 2013.

Kenneth now spends his days at a retirement facility in Bowling Green, KY where he keeps up with family and news from ALC regularly. He says he loves giving to ALC because, in his words, “they can stretch a dollar further than anyone.” His continued commitment to our school and to the Purpose Road philosophy reminds us that here in the 21st century, people still remember the wise words of Alice Lloyd: “The Leaders are here.”

The post Donor Spotlight: Kenneth Whitfield first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.
