The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team played three contests during spring break. Following are recaps of each matchup.
March 9th
Miami-Hamilton – 7 | Alice Lloyd – 1
Cincinnati, OH: The Eagles journeyed to Cincinnati to face Miami-Hamilton. In a game that went down to the wire, ALC fell by one run.
The Lady Eagles got off to a fine start as they plated 1 run in the first and added 2 in the second to lead 3-0.
Unfortunately, the hosts battled back and produced a 4-spot in the bottom of the inning and added 2 more runs in the third to lead 6-3.
The visitors would answer with 3 runs of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 6-6. The score held until the final inning.
Unfortunately for ALC, Hamilton would manage to score the winning run with two outs in their last at-bat.
For ALC, junior Madisson Minks and sophomore Lydia Mcintosh would lead the way with 2 hits apiece.
Junior Samantha Sturgill, sophomores Morgan Robinson and Mckenzie Brewer, and the freshmen trio of Alyssa Clark, Abby Stambaugh and Hannah Buchannan each had 1 hit. Clark and Stambaugh both had a double.
Clark led the way with 2 RBI’s while Minks, Mcintosh, and Stambaugh each had 1.
Katie Kilburn got the start and earned the win on the mound. She surrendered six runs on ten hits, striking out four.
Brewer was on the mound for Alice Lloyd. She surrendered eleven hits, but only three earned runs in the hard-luck match. The Lady Eagles hurt themselves with 4 errors.
MH won the hitting battle by just one, 11-10.
The second game was rained out.
March 10
GAME 1
Rochester College – 7 | Alice Lloyd – 6
Pikeville, KY: ALC made a gritty come back against their foes from Michigan, but fell in the final inning.
The contest remained scoreless until the third when RC scored 2 runs.
The Lady Eagles jumped back into contention one inning later to knot the score at 2-2. However, Rochester answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the third to lead 6-2.
Trailing 6-2 in the sixth inning, ALC responded with 4 big runs of their own to set the score at 6-6.
Unfortunately, for the second straight game, the Lady Eagles saw their opponent score 1 run in their final at-bat with two outs to scratch out the win.
For the visitors, Stambaugh had a big day as she rapped out 3 hits, while teammates Sturgill, Clark, and Buchanan each had 2 hits.
Robinson, Brewer, and Minks along with sophomores Mercedez Gilliam and Jada Estep all added 1 hit. Estep blasted a triple and led the way with 2 RBI’s.
Alexis Evans came on in relief and was the winning pitcher while Gilliam suffered the tough defeat.
Both squads had 14 hits.
GAME 2
University of Pikeville – 10 | Alice Lloyd – 2
ALC hung tough before faltering in the late innings.
The hosts posted 2 runs in the second and added 1 in each of the next two innings.
Trailing 4-0 entering the fifth, the Lady Eagles punched out 2 runs to slice the deficit in half, 4-2, and make things interesting.
Unfortunately, fatigue set in as UP scored 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away. They then held on for the win.
For the visitors, Sturgill, Brewer, and Buchanan each had 1 hit while Buchanan had 1 RBI.
Hannah Skaggs was the winning pitcher while Haley Howell suffered the defeat.
Pikeville won the hitting battle 10-3 and committed 2 errors compared to ALC with 3.
