Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles battled the entire way, before dropping a late 71-66 decision at the hands of the Indiana University-East Lady Red Wolves. The River States Conference match-up was played Saturday, January 5th.
In the opening quarter, the two evenly matched clubs took turns trading buckets. When Lady Eagle freshman guard Hannah Kash drained two late charity tosses, the hosts led 15-12 after one period.
In the second quarter, IUE rode the offensive play of forward Elizabeth Philpot and outscored ALC 20-11. Due to this effort, the guests would take a 32-26 advantage at intermission.
The third period saw Alice Lloyd fight back. After falling behind by nine (38-29) with 6:44 showing, junior guard Katie Moore and sophomore center Alex Clifton would each score 6 points apiece to spark a 16-9 run.
When sophomore guard Ali May bagged a 23-foot bomb at the 0.44 mark, she handed the Lady Eagles a 48-47 advantage heading into the final stanza.
In the final quarter, the visitors opened play with a quick 6-0 burst to regain the lead (53-48).
Fortunately, for the fans in attendance, the home club refused to go away.
After scrapping their way back into contention, Moore would finally give Alice Lloyd a 66-64 lead on two big free throws at 2:16.
However, on the next Red Wolf, possession, they would hit two foul shots of their own to knot things at 66 apiece. Next, following two consecutive empty possessions by ALC, the guests would turn them into 3-4 charity tosses to edge in front, 69-66, with only .26 remaining.
Trailing by three and desperately needing a hoop, the home squad found Moore who had sank 4-7 from long range so far. However, her contested three rimmed off at .12 and was nabbed by East forward Amanda Worland. When she coolly drilled both attempts, the door was finally closed on the Caney Creek squad.
For Alice Lloyd (7-5; 4-2 RSC), Moore led all scorers with 20 points. She also led the squad in rebounds with 8. She was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Haley Hall with 11 points and Kash with 10. Hall also led in steals with 3 while Kash led with 3 assists.
The home club finished the night shooting 35.2% (19-54) from the field including 26.9 % (7-26) from behind the arc. They sank 80.8% (21-26) from the charity stripe and added 30 rebounds, 9 assists, and 11 steals.
IUE (6-11; 4-1 RSC) was led by Philpot with 19 and Worland with 15. Their squad shot 43.5% (27-62) from the field and 39.1% (9-23) from deep. They finished at 61.5% (8-13) from the charity stripe and added 40 rebounds, 12 assists, and 3 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action next week in two important conference tilts. On Tuesday, January 8th, they travel to Midway University for a 5:30 pm match-up. They then return home Thursday, January 10th to face Asbury University at 5:30 pm.
