Austin CombsPIPPA PASSES:  Five players reached double figures as the home-standing Alice Lloyd Eagles earned their first victory of the young season by defeating the Warren Wilson College Owls in a high octane barnburner, 114-108. The matchup occurred Wednesday, November 7th.

In the opening half, fueled by the potent punch of senior forward Simon Christon, junior guard Blake Smith and sophomore guard Austin Combs, the Eagles came out with red-hot shooting against the Owls pressure defense. The hosts scored at will and would quickly stretch the advantage to double-digits. However, the Owls rode the combination of guard Jaquann Lockhart and a blistering 11-24 team shooting from long range to work their way back into contention. ALC would hold a slim 57-54 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Alice Lloyd would come out well, only to watch WWC fight back and take the lead. In need of a boost, Coach JR Hammond turned to his bench, and center Colyn Sturgill and guard Chandler Stewart, would deliver. The two freshman came up huge and helped provide the needed spark to reverse thing and help propel the Eagles to victory.

For the victors (1-2), Combs led the way with 22 points. He was followed closely by Smith with 21 points and 2 steals. Sophomore guard Noah Young played well as he finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Christon stuffed the stat sheet as he pumped in 17 points and completed the double-double with 16 monster rebounds. He also led the club with 8 assists, just missing a triple-double by two assists. Sturgill looked impressive as the big man finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 big blocks. Junior forward Chance Cornett and Stewart added 9 and 8 points respectively.

WWC (2-1) was led by a game-high 25 points from Lockhart.

For the game, the winners shot a solid 50.6% (42-83) including 37.5% (12-32) from three-point land. They were also 60 % (18-30) from the foul line. They added 57 rebounds, 31 assists, and 5 steals.

The feisty Owls shot 44.6% (41-92) including 46.2% (18-39) from long range. They were also 57.1 % (8-14) from the foul line while adding 38 rebounds, 18 assists, and 7 steals.

Alice Lloyd returns to action Friday when they join the women for a double-header when they journey to the Volunteer State to face the Welch College Flames at 9:00 pm.
