The ALC Men’s Golf team played the Work College Challenge against Berea College at Battlefield Golf course on Saturday, October 27. Eagles were the defenders and needed to have an equal or greater number of points than the challenger to win the matches. Last year’s winning Eagles golf team was a strong team, with 5 players who shoot in the 70’s, and we played at our home course, Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg. This year we have 4 new players along with three returning players, including 3 freshmen, and we played at Berea’s home course, Battlefield.

The competition was 4 sets of 2 matches. One set was the top player of each team playing singles matches. The other three matches were doubles matches; one match was a 2 man scramble, the other two-man alternate shot. The Eagles team was coached by assistant coach Jared Albright.

Eagles Golf Captain, junior Aaron Minor won both his matches with Berea’s Peyton Browning to score 2 points. Sophomore Reece Ison teamed with freshman Korey Hanson, who lost both matches 2 and 1 to Ryan Blevins and Michael Akard of Berea. Sophomore Isaiah Penley and junior Brit Bowling won their scramble match 1 up but lost their alternate shot match by the same score to Mountaineers Evan King and Jeremiah Bolon. Freshmen Matthew Henson and Hayden Halbert lost their scramble match 4 and 3 to Berea’s Isaiah Bolon and Zach Withers, giving Berea their 4th point, with the matches coming down to Matt and Hayden’s alternate-shot match. They were down 2 with 4 holes to play. Loss of another hole would give the matches to Berea, however, Matt and Hayden came through to win the match on the last hole for a final score over the 8 matches of 4-4, giving the Eagles their victory.

Eagles next tournament is the Hiwassee College Fall Invitational at Oak Ridge Country Club in Oak Ridge, TN on November 5th and 6th.
