Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles faced a tough West Virginia Tech squad at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center on Tuesday, January 23. In a contest that was action-packed until the end, the Golden Bears pulled away late to win 103-96.

In the opening stanza, the visitors raced out to a quick lead and kept it between 5-7 points the majority of the half. The Eagles showed their resilience, however, and kept the contest within striking distance. A late run was capped off by a 23-foot bomb from senior guard Austin Crisp with .06 remaining on an assist from Timmy Dalton. The trifecta gave the hosts a 55-54 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, following an Eagle bucket from Dalton, the Golden Bears took advantage of the hot shooting of guards Thomas Collins and Brandon Shingles and exploded with a 14-0 blitz to vault ahead 68-57 with 14:31 remaining. Their lead would reach its zenith at 82-70 with just over eight minutes left to play.

Once again, the boys from Caney Creek dug deep and counterpunched with a run of their own. When junior forward Simon Christon fed freshman guard Noah Young for a 23-foot swish, it capped off a 19-7 run at the 4:03 mark. The game was now tied at 89 entering the home stretch.

With the atmosphere electric, Collins gave WVT some breathing room with four free throws.

After trading foul shots, ALC junior guard  Ryan House’s jumper brought the Eagles within two (96-94) with just 1:11 showing on the clock.

In the last critical minute, Tech ran the shot-clock down to just .03 before sinking a huge jumper. On the next possession, Alice Lloyd guard Blake Smith missed on a difficult drive and the visitors grabbed the rebound. Collins got a quick break-away shot to finally put the contest in the win column for his club.

For Alice Lloyd (10-9; 3-7 RSC) five players reached double figures in a balanced effort. They were led on the night by sophomore guard Smith and freshman guard Dalton, both with 17. House was right behind with 16. Young added 13 while senior center Jake Allen chipped in with 10. Sophomore forward Chance Cornett led the team with 6 rebounds while Christon and Young both dished out 5 assists. House and Young each contributed 3 steals.

ALC shot 45.5% (35-77) from the field and 27.3% (9-33) from long range. They sank 70.4% (17-24) from the foul line. They also added 34 rebounds, 16 assists, and 8 steals.

For WV Tech (13-8; 7-3 RSC), Collins and Shingles led the way with 32 and 26 points.

Their club finished shooting 54% (34-63) from the floor and 40% (12-30) from behind the arc. They sank 74.2% (23-31) from the foul line and also added 39 rebounds, 13 assists, and 5 steals.

ALC returns to conference action on Thursday, January 25 with a 7:30 pm matchup against Carlow University.  They close out the week on Saturday, January 27 when they face Point Park University at 3:00 pm.
