Pippa Passes, KY:  Senior guard Kayla Wilson led a balanced attack as Coach John Mills Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles opened the 2017-18 campaign with a victory over the Warren Wilson College Lady Owls Saturday afternoon at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center.

In the first quarter, the game was tied at 16 with 2:24 showing before Miranda Wilson and junior center Emilie Harrell scored seven consecutive points to give the hosts a cushion. The Owls would respond and close the quarter on a 7-1 run. ALC led 24-21 at the buzzer.

In the second stanza, the Eagles extended the lead out to as much as eleven (44-33) and would take a 49-40 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, the visitors would battle back. Over the first six minutes, they would outscore ALC 14-6 and slice the deficit to just two (56-54). Fortunately, Miranda Wilson would then score six points to settle down her club, and the hosts took a 69-60 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the last quarter, WW would get within five, but the Eagles made clutch plays over the final five minutes to pull away for the win.

For the victors (1-0), Kayla Wilson led the way with 16 points, connecting on 4-7 three point bombs. The scrappy guard also hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds and added 3 blocks and 3 steals.  Freshman guard Hayley Hall made a nice debut as she pumped in 14 points and added 6 rebounds. Senior Miranda Wilson was steady as she added 11 points and a game-high 5 assists while freshman center Alex Clifton and junior guard Courtney Vasquez provided a big punch off the bench with 11 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore Jayla Spurlock just missed double-figures with 9 points.

The Owls (0-1) were led by Amber Godfrey with a game-high 21 points.

For the game, Alice Lloyd shot 41.4% from the field (29-70) and 40.9 % (9-22) from long range. They hit 62.5% (15-24) from the charity line. WW shot 39.4 %(26-66) from the floor and 40 % (8-20) from long range. They hit 91.7% (11-12) from the charity line. Alice Lloyd returns to play on Saturday as they travel to Warren Wilson College to face the Owls in a return match. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
