On February 11, 2017, the June Buchanan School held a 10-year reunion to honor the 2006-07 14th Region Championship Crusader boys squad before a large and appreciative crowd at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center.

The team, which finished the season with an outstanding 26-7 record, captured the imagination of basketball fans across the state with their magical run to Rupp Arena.

In the summer leading into that season, they put teams on notice that they would be a major contender by advancing all the way to the championship game of the AAU State Tournament held in Lexington where they finally fell to the Scott County Cardinals (who would go on to win the state tournament in March). During the season, they won the first of two consecutive WYMT Wayne Supply Mountain Classic Tournaments and forged a solid 23-5 record heading into regional play.

In the Regional Tournament held at Letcher County Central, they opened the quarter-finals by defeating a physical 19-9 Powell County squad 67-55. In semi-final play, they completely dismantled a powerful 25-3 Breathitt County club 84-63. In the championship match-up against a 25-8 Hazard Bulldog club, the Crusaders took the lead in the first half and never relinquished it on their way to a 51-46 14th Regional title victory.

JBS went into the KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen on March 22, 2007, paired against 28-4 state power, Warren Central High School. Because the Dragons (who were making their fifth consecutive appearance with one championship, one runner-up finish, and a third final-four appearance to their credit), who were one of the state’s largest schools, were facing a Crusader club with only 75 students in the entire high school, the Crusaders were embraced by fans statewide. The David vs Goliath story even spread across newspapers coast to coast.

In the contest, held in front of over 14,00 fans (and most cheering for the underdogs), June Buchanan led the majority of the opening half and only trailed 32-31 at intermission. In the second half, the Dragons dashed the hoped of thousands of spectators as their depth finally wore down the Crusaders, and they pulled away late for a 71-53 victory. WC would eventually reach the final four once again.

Members of the record-setting team were: Brock Childers, Ryne Conley, Clark Stepp, Trey Short, Joe Hall, Manager Nate Hovee, Garrison Collins, Brent Hall, Lewis Collins, Sam Sparkman, Manager Dru Walters, Clint Stepp, Tate Cox, Shane Slone, Zach Amburgey, Braxton Childers, Travis Thomas, Manager Jordan Osborne, Coach Gary D. Stepp, Coach Jim Stepp, Assistant Coach Jimmy Cox, and Assistant Coach Josh Cook.
