Steve SilversOn Monday, January 4, 2016, Alice Lloyd College presented two $1,000 dollar scholarships at the WYMT Mountain Classic Tournament Awards Night, which was held at Knott County Central High School. These scholarships are presented to Appalachian students as a means to extend educational opportunities, despite financial situations. These scholarships are presented to Appalachian high school seniors with high academic achievements. Alice Lloyd College will match up to 10 scholarships presented to students who enroll at ALC through the college’s Tuition Guarantee Program.

Steven Silvers, a June Buchanan Senior was honored with a scholarship that night. Steven is the son of Steve and Mural Silvers of Pike County. Steven distinguishes himself outside of academics as well. In early January he was named Most Valuable Player in the Hoodies House National High School Hoops Classic, which was held in North Carolina. Amanda Clark, Dean of the June Buchanan School, remarked that Steven is a leader both in school and on the basketball count, “Steven is a remarkable young man, who demonstrates his leadership skills every time he walks into school, or onto the count.”

Steven credits his accomplishments to the guidance he has received while attending June Buchanan School. “I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to win this award and allowing me to attend a school like June Buchanan. I have been blessed to be around such good Christian people on and off the court.”

Alice Lloyd College and the June Buchanan School are honored to be a part of this year’s WYMT Mountain Classic Tournament Awards Night.  Participating in this program helps further ALC’s mission of assisting the future leaders of Appalachia to obtain educational opportunities.
