Spirit Night 5The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for an important KIAC match-up against the Cincinnati Christian Eagles. In need of a big win, Coach John Mills’ ladies played a solid game to earn a 74-63 victory.

In the opening quarter, the visitors came out on fire. Fueled by 2 long range triples apiece from Amber Shepherd and India Hairston-James, ALC bolted to a 21-6 lead with 2:13 remaining. They settled for a 24-11 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the visiting Eagles opened on an 8-1 run. The lead reached its zenith of 19 (33-16) with 8:41 on the clock after another trifecta, courtesy of senior Megan Jones, on a nice feed from Tailor Morgan. Alice Lloyd seemed poised to blow the game away.

The hosts had different plans, however. They closed the half on a furious 23-10 run to set the score at 41-35 by intermission, and change the games momentum.

Sparked by their rally, CCU opened the second half with fire in their eyes. They whittled at the deficit until guard Baylee Bennett sank a huge 22 foot shot at the 5:16 mark to give her squad the lead, 44-43. They then proceeded to outscore the visitors 10-7 the rest of the way, and took a 54-50 advantage going into the final stanza.

In the last quarter, sophomore Taylor Arthur, who had been held in check the entire game, took over by scoring 7 points during the first 5 minutes. Her aggressive play propelled her teammates on a 9-3 run, and give them the lead back, 59-57.

Determined not to allow another come-back by the hosts, Alice Lloyd then received two huge three point buckets, courtesy of the junior Shepherd and sophomore Bailey O’Brian. They then salted the game away by sinking 5 free throws down the stretch.

For ALC (5-10; 1-5 KIAC), they were led by Hairston-James as the freshman responded with a game-high 19 points. She completed the double-double as she hauled down 10 big rebounds. Shepherd backed her up with 16 points and 8 boards. Arthur added 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Morgan dished out a game-high 7 assists.

Cincinnati Christian (3-10; 0-3 KIAC) was led by Brianna Ruffin with 12 points.
