Brandon McGeorge

ALC alum Brandon McGeorge has a very bright future to look forward to, but a great past to reminisce on. Brandon, who is from Manchester, Kentucky, graduated from Alice Lloyd College in May of 2013 with his Bachelor of Science in Biology after majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry.

Currently, Brandon is enrolled at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he is predicted to graduate from in 2017. Upon graduating from Louisville, Brandon plans to train in his respective specialty for a given number of years.

Brandon says, “Having just completed my first year of medical school, it is even more apparent just how well I was prepared for professional school. The preparation, support, and guidance you receive at ALC are second to none, and serve a great asset to anyone looking for a career in medicine.”

Brandon participated in many activities during his time at ALC which aided in preparing him for furthering his education. He was an active member of the Allied Health Club for all four years of his undergraduate education, and worked as a Teacher’s Assistant for Dr. Janelle Pryor, Professor of Biology. Brandon worked hard and studied diligently during his free time. In addition to this, he says, “During my four years at ALC I would spend my summers participating in pre-medical programs and studies with students from schools across the nation, which helped in realizing the quality of the education I was receiving.” His tenacity and determination paid off; he received many awards while at ALC including the Biology Award, Dr. Larry M. Leslie Pre-Medicine Award, the Academic Assistant in Biology Award, made the President’s List every semester during his four years at ALC, and was named Salutatorian of the Class of 2013.

Brandon says he chose Alice Lloyd College because of its strong reputation for readying students for professional school and because of the overall cost of an education at ALC. “I was offered the Presidential Scholarship which covers all costs associated with attending Alice Lloyd College.”

However, Brandon says that today he has realized how choosing ALC truly impacted his life for the better. “Looking back on my experience on ALC, one of the things I most appreciate about the college is the effort they make to help students succeed. Very few institutions put forth the effort to ensure a student’s success both in undergraduate and postgraduate studies like ALC, and for that I will always be thankful.”

As a recipient of the Caney Scholars Program, Brandon receives financial support to aid him in completing his graduate degree. “Being a part of the Caney Scholars Program is an honor. One of the challenges faced with any professional school program is the cost of attending. This scholarship has helped tremendously in offsetting the financial burden of medical school.”

In short, he says, “ALC offers students of Central Appalachia a quality science education, at low cost, right here at home.” We are excited to see all that Brandon accomplishes and wish him luck in his future endeavors!
