The Alice Lloyd women’s basketball team kicked off their season on Saturday, November 1st against Hiwassee College. Hiwassee gave ALC all it could handle but eventually, the Lady Eagles pulled away late in the second half to take a 95-83 victory.

The Lady Eagles were on their home court for this contest against non-conference opponent Hiwassee. The Lady Eagles came out sleepwalking for most of the first half and it showed as both teams went back and forth. The Lady Eagles were thought to be the superior team but despite this, only led by two at halftime, 37-35.

The Lady Eagles still weren’t able to get away from Hiwassee early on in the second half. However, Coach John Mills ordered his unit to ratchet up the pressure. This forced the Lady Tigers into making critical errors and it allowed ALC to go on a much needed run to give them breathing room. It was a tougher game than expected for Alice Lloyd, but jumping out to a 1-0 start is all that matters at this point.

ALC shot 42 percent (37 for 88) from the field while holding Hiwassee to 36 percent (26 for 71) shooting.

The Lady Eagles outrebounded the Lady Tigers 48-32 while forcing 22 turnovers. The Lady Eagles made 16 for 30 (53 percent) from the charity stripe. Hiwassee was 29 for 43 (67 percent) from the foul line.

Carla Booth led ALC in scoring with 14 points. Other double-digit scorers include Serena Nickell (11 points), Bailey O’Brien (10 points) and Megan Jones (10 points). O’Brien also tallied 9 assists while Nickell, younger sister of Ariel Nickell, channeled her sister’s play, leading the team with 9 rebounds.

Hiwassee was led by Tamyah Potts with 20 points.
