The June Buchanan School made its mark at the 21st Annual Regional Coal Fair, which was held at the beginning of April this year. The Coal Fair is hosted each year by Coal Education Development and Resource, Inc., in efforts to educate the community about the coal industry and paint a positive image of the area’s most abundant natural resource. Students in kindergarten through twelfth grade in southeastern Kentucky’s coal counties harness their creativity and submit a variety of coal-related projects in seven categories, such as Technology-Multimedia, Art, and English-Literature.

The journey to the Regional fair began at JBS in early March where students from all grades submitted nearly eighty projects to be judged by Alice Lloyd College’s Kentucky Education Association. Of these, thirty-five projects were chosen to move on to the Regional fair. Seventeen high school students, 12 middle school students, and 6 elementary students made up the thirty-five.

The Regional Coal Fair was held at the University of Pikeville on April 7-11 and received over four hundred entries from students all across the area. Despite the large amount of competition, JBS students brought home three awards in their respective age groups:

Dora Stanley received third place for her project in Middle School Art, Matthew Ison received second place for his project in High School Technology-Multimedia, and the duo of Jake Long and Princewill Anosike received first place for their joint project in High School Mathematics.
