Alice Lloyd College is proud to announce that junior Ashley Daily has been awarded a scholarship from the English-Speaking Union, Kentucky Branch to travel abroad and spend a summer term studying History, Politics, & Society at Oxford University.

The scholarship, part of the English-Speaking Union’s British University Summer School Fellowships program, provides high school teachers and qualified Kentucky college students with the opportunity to further their education through summer study at various prestigious learning facilities in Britain, including Oxford University, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Cambridge University, and the University of Edinburgh.

“This is a huge honor and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Megan Burnett, Alice Lloyd’s Study Abroad Coordinator. “We are so proud of Ashley for winning this highly competitive scholarship.”

Ashley, daughter of Troy and Amy Daily, hails from Hiltons, Virginia and is a double major in History/Pre-Law and Sociology. Daily met all of the requirements for the scholarship, and after being interviewed, was selected as one of only four Kentucky students to receive the scholarship.

The scholarship includes tuition, lodging and two meals per day for the three-week courses at the institution. In addition to this, the scholarship includes one week’s lodging in London and a cash allowance to cover costs of travel and any other expenses.

“The committee was very impressed with the high level of competition this year,” said Emil S. Jeffers, the Kentucky Branch Scholarship Coordinator. “Clearly, any student selected to represent their college at this level of competition has a successful career path ahead of them.”

During candidate interviews, the Kentucky Branch’s Scholarship Committee looked for students they believed would have experiences during this summer program that promised to be especially “life changing.” The committee’s primary intention was to find students who could become lifelong ambassadors for British/American cultural exchanges and who might also return to Kentucky for a career. By selecting Daily, the committee felt that she exhibited a high degree of professionalism and an outstanding academic and personal record, which placed her in the top 10% of her academic field of study at Alice Lloyd College.

“I’m very excited about this rare opportunity,” said Daily, currently interning at the state capitol in Frankfort, Ky. “I never imagined I would get to participate in such a program. Oxford is, of course, such a prestigious university, and I am honored that the English-Speaking Union chose me as one of the participants.”

Daily’s future plans involve furthering her education in law school. She also wants to enter the world of politics.
