The Alice Lloyd College choir, The Voices of Appalachia, is set to bring their spring 2012 concert to the campus of Alice Lloyd College. As part of the Caney Convocation Series, the choir, under the direction of Richard Bowers, will sing selections from their spring tour. Each year the ALC choir travels to a different region of the United States performing for churches and organizations. This year, the choir headed to the Midwest, going to various places in the states of Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. The tour culminated with a very exciting and eventful trip to Chicago.

The choir will present many of the hymns and ballads of the southern Appalachian highlands. During the concert, the audience will be treated to several a cappella performances and some with accompaniment. Through their singing, the choir members strive to convey the deep feelings mountain people have about their heritage and region. Also, a number of the choir members will be playing traditional mountain instruments, including the banjo, dobro, and mandolin. Audience members can expect to hear old standards like “Salt Creek” and “Kentucky Waltz,” choir favorites “In the Shadow of Your Wings” and “Come, Christians, Join to Sing,” Appalachian hymns like “Down to the River to Pray,” “Lay ‘em Down,” and “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem,” and a gorgeous rendition of “O Shenandoah” by guitarist Ron Howard.

Please join us on Thursday, April 19th, at 7:30 PM in the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts (CAC).
