The 25th annual WYMT Mountain Classic held this January has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships over the years. Of 142 high school seniors, JBS seniors Sadie Haigler, Bridgett Howard, and Kolby Slone received 3 of those scholarships worth $1000 each to provide for college expenses.

JBS student-recipients recognize the value of applying for every scholarship available and confirm that every little bit helps when it comes to providing for college expenses in today’s economy.

“I’m thankful to be receiving the scholarship,” said JBS senior Sadie Haigler. Haigler, who hopes to study vocal performance at McNally Smith College, is quick to add, “I have only one parent to help pay for college and every little bit helps!”

Senior Bridgett Howard chimed in, saying, “I’m lucky to receive the WYMT scholarship, otherwise, paying for college would be difficult.” Howard hopes to study journalism at Transylvania University.  She went on to say, “It’s really nice to be able to help my dad out by getting scholarships like this one.”

Kolby Slone, another JBS senior, stated, “I’m blessed and honored to be a recipient of the WYMT scholarship, because it aids in tuition and book costs that are so expensive these days.” Slone plans to study psychology at Berea.

Tara Reynolds, JBS’s Guidance Counselor, said, “I am constantly posting scholarship opportunities for seniors whether they are big or small.” Ms. Reynolds hopes students will continue to take advantage of every opportunity with which they are presented. She stressed that students are often surprised at the scholarships they are eligible to receive, and it is often a matter of simply making them aware of what is available to them.

“It is wonderful to see exceptional students benefit from the hard work our families and businesses pour into this region,” said Dean Amanda Clark. “We are thankful for local businesses and events such as The Mountain Classic Basketball Tournament that provide students a means to better themselves through a college education.”
