Eagles Lose in Opening Round of KIAC Tournament

The Alice Lloyd Eagles put up a valiant effort, but saw their season come to a close in the last minute at the hands of the home-standing Brescia University Bearcats, 88-81.

This season, the KIAC elected to allow the top four seeds to host the first round games on their home-court. The Bearcats received the conference’s #2 seed. As the #7 seed, the Eagles, therefore, were forced to make the 300 mile trip to Owensboro.

In the opening half, both teams played hard and Brescia jumped out to a quick lead. However, backed by sophomores Van Ferguson and Nick Brumback, ALC only trailed 34-30 at intermission.

In the second half, ALC fought to keep the game close. They played with an inspired effort and trailed by only three (84-81) with just: 40 sec remaining. From this point, BU was able to connect on four free throws to place the contest out of reach.

On the night, Alice Lloyd won from the field, as they sank 29 field goals to Brescia’s 27 and hit 6 three pointers to Brescia’s 5.

The contest was decided at the free throw line. In the first half, the Eagles were 10-13 and BC was 4-7. However, in the critical second half, Brescia outshot the Eagles from the charity stripe a staggering 38-10, and the discrepancy was just too much to overcome. For the night, BU finished 29-45, while ALC connected on 17-23.

For the Eagles (8-20), team scoring honors went to the sophomore duo of guard Ferguson and forward Brumback who netted 21 and 17 apiece. Fellow sophomore Brandon Hayes contributed 13, and junior guard Will Jones added 10.

For Brescia (22-9), Howard and Ingram tossed in 22 and 21.
