A sick man helped by thee shall make thee strong;
Thou shalt be served thyself by every sense
Of service which thou renderest.
Alice Lloyd College was built upon our founder’s deep-set belief that “The leaders are here, waiting to be trained if given a chance.” For nearly 100 years, this mission has been successful, churning out highly educated, mountain-born and bred leaders who are shaping the future of their communities and Appalachia. Thousands of people all across the country have supported our mission, blessing us with gifts large and small that help us continue to offer the opportunity of a quality, affordable education to Appalachian students. Without their generosity, as well as the annual donations from our alumni and friends, Alice Lloyd would be unable to serve the region for which it was created.
Acts of selfless service characterized our beginnings, from Abisha Johnson’s donation of a house and land on which Mrs. Lloyd could build her school to friends from the North sending aid when Alice Lloyd and June Buchanan needed it most. From those early days until now, so many acts of service on the part of our founders, supporters, local people, and our students have conspired together to make Alice Lloyd College the regional and national treasure that it is. At Alice Lloyd, our students not only learn and grow as intellectuals, but they receive a character-based education that infuses them with a sense of purpose and a vision of what they could do to help their own people.
To this day, we know of no other college that pays the tuition of its students, educates them, and then, supports qualified students financially as they go on to graduate schools to obtain higher degrees. Our friends, alumni, foundations and corporations, and countless individuals from across the nation give to this college because they realize that there simply is no other place like it.
When you give to Alice Lloyd College, you add your name to a long legacy of service that has helped to transform thousands of lives and the history of an entire region.
We believe that you will undoubtedly reap the reward of that service, as one of June Buchanan’s favorite passages of verse says:
“There is a destiny which makes us brothers;
none goes his way alone.
All that we send into the lives of others
comes back into our own.”
— Edwin Markham
