Financial Aid and Scholarships
Federal Grants
Federal Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is one of the most popular types of federal financial aid. For many students, a Pell Grant provides the foundation onto which other types of financial aid may be added. You are not required to pay back a Pell Grant after you graduate, and only undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree (four-year college degree) or a professional degree are eligible to receive a Pell Grant.
To apply for a Pell Grant, you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can apply only at FAFSA on the Web. When you submit your FAFSA, the U.S. Department of Education uses a formula developed by congress to evaluate your eligibility. This standard formula produces an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). A Student Aid Report (SAR) containing your EFC and other important information will be mailed to your home. Each college you listed on your FAFSA will receive your EFC electronically.
The maximum Pell Grant for the 2008-2009 academic year is expected to be $4,731 based on anticipated federal funding levels. The amount of money you will be eligible for depends on your EFC, Cost of Attendance (COA), and Enrollment Status. You can receive only one Pell Grant during any academic year, and you cannot receive Pell Grant funds at more than one college at a time.
Alice Lloyd College will process your financial aid and present you with a Financial Aid Package once your enrollment has been verified by our Admissions Office. Your financial aid package will explain the amount of your Pell Grant and any other financial aid that you are eligible to receive for the current academic year. The Pell Grant will be paid at least once per term (semester) as long as you maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (PDF/25KB) and meet all other eligibility requirements.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need-that is, students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Priority is given to students who receive the Federal Pell Grant. An FSEOG does not have to be paid back.
The U.S. Department of Education guarantees that each participating school will receive enough money to pay the Federal Pell Grants of its eligible students. There is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG; students at ALC will be awarded an FSEOG based on the availability of funds.
The amount of a FSEOG award will vary from college to college for the 2008-2009 academic year, depending on when you apply, your level of need, and other financial resources assisting you in attending college. The FSEOG will be paid at least once per term (semester) as long as you maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (PDF/25KB) and meet all other FSEOG

SMART Grant
(Federal Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent)
The enactment of the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (HERA) among other things created the National Science and Mathematics Access To Retain Talent Grant (SMART) effective with the 2006-07 Award Year. The U.S. Department of Education recently published interim implementing regulations and we have begun identifying and awarding the National SMART Grant to qualifying students.
Otherwise eligible students may receive a National SMART Grant of $4,000 for each of their third and fourth academic years of undergraduate study. Students who have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, but fewer than 90 semester hours are defined as being in their third year of undergraduate study. Students who have earned a minimum of 90 semester hours, but fewer than 120 semester hours are defined as being in their fourth year of undergraduate study. Once a student earns 120 semester hours they will no longer be eligible for the SMART Grant.
To be eligible, a student:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (students classified as Permanent Residents or any other non-citizen status are not eligible);
- Must receive a Federal Pell Grant during the same semester;
- Must be enrolled full-time in a degree program;
- Must be enrolled in the third or fourth academic year of his or her program of study;
- Must major in biology, chemistry, math, computer science, or environmental science. The U. S. Department of Education has identified the eligible major fields of study by CIP (Classification Instructional Program) code;
- Must have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the end of each preceding term of enrollment in the coursework required for the student's major.
- The total awarded financial aid cannot exceed the student's Cost of Attendance (COA) minus the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Once a student has received $4,000 in National SMART Grant as a third year student, he/she is not eligible for additional SMART Grant funds as a third-year student, even if the student has earned fewer than 90 semester hours. Once a student has received $4,000 in National SMART Grant as a fourth-year student, he/she is not eligible for additional SMART Grant funds as a fourth-year student, even if the student has earned fewer than 120 hours.
SMART funds, when combined with other need-based funds, cannot exceed a student's need as determined using FAFSA data. Need is the coast of attendance minus expected family contribution.
