I have been a student at Alice Lloyd College for two years now, and I am starting on my third. If I hadn’t come to Alice Lloyd College, I would probably be working in the coal mines, struggling to make it in these tough economic times. Now, I am on the right path to a great career in Business Administration.

Most of the students here at Alice Lloyd have other jobs off campus in addition to work-study to help pay for their personal expenses, and almost all have a summer job. As for myself, I work weekends during school, on breaks, and seven days a week during the summer. I do automotive collision repair as well as industrial sandblasting and industrial painting for Feltner’s Body Shop. I love my job. Vehicles have been a passion of mine since I was a young child. I have worked at the same shop for almost four years now, and the work experiences I have gathered from my actual job and work-study at Alice Lloyd have helped propel me to be a student supervisor of janitors at the June Buchanan Alumni Center.

I just wanted to let you know that your donations are not wasted at ALC. Your money helps fuel the Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship, which is awarded to Appalachian students who need help financially but who want to earn their education. These students are just like me, and they appreciate what you have done to make sure that we have the opportunity to receive a quality education. Words cannot express how thankful I am that you have contributed to my education, someone whom you do not even know!

Help us continue the work of Mrs. Alice Lloyd and countless others by giving to Alice Lloyd College! With gifts from people like you, we can continue to offer a quality education to the young people of Appalachia.

UK Health Sciences Professor Receives Excellence in Teaching Award

By: Brooke Smith, UK College of Health Sciences

Charles Marshall, assistant professor in the Division of Physical Therapy, has been named the 2013 recipient of the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences’ Kingston Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Marshall’s primary teaching responsibility is in the Center of Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard. He is responsible for teaching human gross anatomy, advanced osetology, histology for physical therapy students, and neuroanatomy and physiology.

“I am honored and humbled to win the Kingston Award. I love teaching, especially to students near my home in rural Kentucky,” Marshall said.

According to his nominators, “Marshall demonstrates sound educational pedagogy that is appreciated by his students. With this commitment to teaching also comes a calm and professional advisor. He is a role model for many of the rural students in the physical therapy program and his easy going advising style is appreciated. His presence on the campus gives students someone to emulate. He is an example of someone who has used a strong education in a positive way to give back to his community as he is originally from Hazard.”

Dr. Marshall’s dedication to the Hazard students is seen day after day, said Hannah Jefferson, UK Physical Therapy Class of 2013 president. “He advocates for everyone in our program and legitimately wants all of us to succeed. He will entertain any questions from each of the three classes at any given time throughout the semester, as well as asking how we are doing on clinical rotations, and honestly caring about our futures.”

The Kingston Award was established in recognition of Richard “Dick” Kingston’s creativity and innovation in education. This award recognizes faculty for outstanding contributions and long-term consistent excellence in teaching.

Maggard joins his former Jaguars teammate Brad Baker at ALC.

“The campus felt like home,” Maggard said. “My mind was made up, and I didn’t need to visit any other schools.”

Alice Lloyd’s men’s tennis program is in its infancy. Going into only its second season of existence, Coach Dustan Turner is looking to build his team with quality student-athletes from Appalachia.

“We’re tickled to death to sign young men from this area,” Coach Turner said. “Justin is a good student and a good fit for us. As long as he’s willing to work and put forth the effort, he’ll be fine.”

Piarist’s John Gullett is another local talent who hopes to make an immediate impact for the Eagles.

“John is a remarkable player,” Coach Turner said. “He is really going to help us build our tennis team.”

Gullett is set to graduate from The Piarist School on May 18th. He is the son of Greg and Janeah Gullett. His grandparents are the late Nelson Gullett and Billie Gullett and Lowell and Janet Arnett.

The Alice Lloyd women’s tennis program, under the direction of head coach Mary Turner, is pleased to announce the signing of Knott County Central High School’s Ashley Cornett to an athletic letter of intent for the 2013-14 season. Coach Turner made the short trip to Hindman, KY on Wednesday, April 17th, and returned to Pippa Passes with the fresh signature of the Lady Patriots’ singles star.

“Ashley is not only outstanding on the court,” said Coach Turner, “but off the court, as well. She has excelled academically. As a player, she is very determined and hardworking, which are two key assets to building our tennis program.”

With the loss of seniors Lydia Harris and Rebekah Bevins, the Lady Eagles will have a young team next season in the always-challenging Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). However, the addition of Cornett will go a long way towards bolstering the team with the talent it needs to succeed. Cornett was a top performer in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) in which she was the 14th Region Singles Champion. She and doubles partner Kennedy King also won this year’s doubles championship. Cornett advanced to state competition in both categories.

“She is exactly what we want in a tennis player,” Turner said. “I’ve had the chance to watch Ashley grow through the years. She loves the game, and her enthusiasm for competing is just amazing. She has a positive attitude even when she’s playing from behind in a match. I’m very glad and proud to welcome her onto our team.”

Even though she’ll be a freshman in Pippa Passes this fall, it sounds like Ashley Cornett could very well provide the Lady Eagles with some much-needed leadership and a passion for winning.

Alice Lloyd College Athletics and Athletic Director Gary Stepp proudly welcome Ashley into the Eagles family!

*Pictured above: Front row (l-r) Alice Lloyd College Tennis Coach Jeff Jacobs, Ashley Cornett, and Ashley’s parents. The idea of “the servant leader” was inspired by Christ’s example, and the recipients of these awards are selected based upon their willingness to serve others for the good of everyone. The awards are handed out during the College’s graduation ceremony and include a $1,000 stipend.

The recipient of the “Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award” was Dr. Janelle Pryor, professor of biology at Alice Lloyd. Dr. Pryor was chosen for the award by three of her fellow faculty members and the president of the Student Government Association (SGA). She is a graduate of Ohio University where she earned a Ph.D. in Environmental and Plant Biology. Dr. Pryor later received a second Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Not only an excellent educator, she is also involved with various campus activities, including serving as faculty sponsor of the Allied Health Club and the Impact Club, which involves students in campus and community service projects while developing skills in leadership and citizenship.

Mrs. Priscilla “Pat” Fraley, Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving, was this year’s winner of the “Leadership in Service Award.” This award is given to a member of the College’s full-time staff who has been employed by the College for at least five years. Mrs. Fraley has devoted much of her lifetime to Alice Lloyd, having begun her campus career in 1963. She has dutifully served all five presidents of the College and watched as Alice Lloyd grew from a small junior college to the four-year, liberal arts institution that it is today.

“Pat is a wonderful person who has given 50 years of service to the people of Appalachia through Alice Lloyd College,” said Joe A. Stepp, the College’s current president. “She leads by serving and has been totally committed to our mission in every post in which she has been asked to serve throughout her career.”

Mrs. Fraley began as a secretary before moving on to working as the Director of Gift Receipting, Director of the Central Information Office, and Assistant to the Director of Development before assuming her current position. During her decades of service at ALC, she has played a key role in making various campus improvements. Her fundraising efforts have helped to raise money to construct, renovate, or repair every single building on campus. Mrs. Fraley is a much-beloved and respected member of the college community in Pippa Passes, and in 2002, she was honored with the College’s “Alumna of the Year” award.

“Alice Lloyd has meant a lot to me and my family,” Fraley said. “I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College, and my husband, sister, and son all went to ALC. Had I not come to work here, it is very doubtful that any of my family would have gone to college.”

“I want my life to be one of service to God and my fellow man,” she continued. “I am grateful to be a part of the Alice Lloyd College family, and I hope I’ve helped to make a difference in some small way.”

With the time, loyalty, and commitment of such individuals as Dr. Pryor and Mrs. Fraley, it is certain that Alice Lloyd College will go on serving Appalachia for many generations to come.

This year, two Alice Lloyd Eagles were named to the prestigious list of honorees.

Second team selection senior Brandon Arnold was an outstanding outfielder during the season, recording only one error. The center fielder from Bristol, Virginia hit .383 with a .483 slugging percentage. Arnold collected 52 hits, 13 of which were doubles. He also had an on-base percentage of .452. In the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC), he was ranked 10th in batting average, 12th in slugging percentage, and 8th in triples. During the season, Arnold was recognized with a KIAC Baseball Player of the Week title.

Senior first baseman Cody Hyden was an honorable mention recipient. The Bristol, Tennessee native had a batting average of .340 and a slugging percentage of .477. He racked up 34 RBIs and had a stellar fielding percentage of .985. His stats made him one of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s most steady players. He was 15th in batting average, 12th in RBIs per game, 14th in slugging percentage, tied for 7th in homeruns, 10th in fielding percentage, and 5th in total putouts.

Arnold and Hyden were tied for 8th in the KIAC for doubles (13).

This marks the second time that Hyden has been recognized by the USCAA. Last year, he was named a First Team All-American as a third baseman.

Over the past two seasons, Eagles Baseball has had four of its players selected as USCAA All-Americans.

The Alice Lloyd College baseball program, under the direction of head coach Scott Cornett, is pleased to announce the signing of Scott High School's (West Virginia) Forrest Spurlock to an athletic letter of intent for the 2013-14 season.

The Alice Lloyd College baseball program, under the direction of head coach Scott Cornett, is pleased to announce the signing of Scott High School’s (West Virginia) Forrest Spurlock to an athletic letter of intent for the 2013-14 season. Eagles assistant coach Jason Stowers traveled to Madison, WV on Monday, May 6th, and returned to Pippa Passes with the fresh signature of the Skyhawks’ big, left-handed power-hitter.

“This young man is the real deal,” Coach Stowers said. “He should make a huge impact for our team next season.”

Forrest Spurlock (bottom center) became an Alice Lloyd Eagle on Monday, May 6th.

The Eagles, while improving their pitching staff, struggled to score at times during the spring. The addition of Spurlock could quite possibly prove to be a strong remedy. Currently, Spurlock leads the state of West Virginia in homeruns (13) and RBIs (59). He has become Scott High’s all-time homerun leader, amassing 38 of them throughout his career. At of the time of writing, Spurlock is batting .500.

The senior has been an excellent leader for his team and will most likely be in the running for his state’s Player of the Year honors. His Skyhawks will battle Chapmanville this week in a best of three-game series for the sectional championship.

It seems that Eagles Baseball could very well have found its next star.
