RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE

Software for Class Assignments

Alice Lloyd College has adopted Microsoft Office as its standard for basic computer software.  This software is used in offices, classrooms, and labs throughout campus.  Microsoft Office includes:

In order to open and/or print a document from campus computer labs or classrooms, the document must be in a compatible format.  Microsoft Works and Corel WordPerfect are not compatible with Microsoft Word.

It is possible to save documents as a Word documents from other software programs and be able to open them in Microsoft Word, but we do not guarantee you will be able to open them on our computers.

It is recommended that you purchase and install Microsoft Office on your personal computer if you plan to bring documents to ALC computers for printing or revising.

Software for Operating Systems

ALC's network will support most operating systems.  The following operating systems are recommended according to what your computer is capable of handling:

Windows Me and Windows XP Home will operate on our network, but not as well as those listed above.  Windows 95 will operate but is no longer supported by Microsoft, so we do not recommend it.  Apple Macintosh will operate, but network settings are done differently.  If you bring a Macintosh to campus, feel free to call for help and we will assist you in connecting to the ALC network.

Software for Virus Protection

You are responsible for keeping your computer virus-free while attached to ALC's network.  Any anti-virus software should work on ALC's network.  However, you must keep the DAT (virus definitions) files up-to-date in order for it to protect your computer.  New DAT files are available weekly from the website of the software provider.  The following virus software programs are recommended:

If you are unable to purchase anti-virus software, ALC has student licenses available for McAfee Virus Scan.  You may install a free copy on your computer to use while you are a student at ALC.  If you need virus software, disks are on loan from the Computer Center.
