Lady Eagles Cross Country Coaches 2012-13

Gary Stepp

Gary Stepp

HEAD COACH: Gary Stepp, 3rd Season

Gary D. Stepp, a native of Pippa Passes, KY, began his coaching career in 1988 when he served as an assistant coach to the Men’s Basketball team at Alice Lloyd College (1988-96, 1998-99).  During this time, ALC went to four consecutive NAIA tournaments (’93-’96) as a member of the TVAC Conference and had seven consecutive 20+ win seasons.  In 2003-2008 he was the Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at The June Buchanan School.  He led the Crusaders to their first ever district championship in school history in 2006.  He led the tiny school, which had an enrollment of only 74 students, to a 26-7 record and their very first 14th Region Championship and a berth in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Tournament at Rupp Arena in 2007. Since that time, Stepp has worked as Alice Lloyd’s Athletic Director and as its Cross Country coach for three seasons.

He was elected to the Alice Lloyd Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

Coach Stepp has thoroughly enjoyed his coaching career at ALC, stating that the relationships he’s forged with his student-athletes mean everything to him. “It is exciting to see your athletes work hard and grow and improve over both a season and a career,” he said. “It is also fulfilling to see them graduate and go on to become successful!” His coaching philosophy is to encourage his athletes to give their best effort in everything they attempt. He said, “If you prepare the best you can and give your maximum effort, then that’s all you can do. Don’t come up short and make excuses because of lack of preparation or effort.” His advice to prospective student-athletes focuses on the acquirement of effective time management skills. He feels that it is important for the members of his team to structure their time so that they may successfully attend classes, study, complete work requirements, and practice and compete on any given day. “If you will learn to budget your time well,” Coach Stepp said, “being a student-athlete at Alice Lloyd will prepare you to have success in your future career.”

Coach Stepp, a graduate of Alice Lloyd and Morehead State University, lives in Pippa Passes with his wife of 12 years, Lisa Gloshen-Stepp, and his daughter Elisabeth, 10.
