EAGLES BEAT MID-CONTINENT UNIVERSITY

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles ended the first half of the season on a high note with an 81-69 win over the Cougars of Mid-Continent University on Saturday afternoon.  Rodney Mitchell got the Eagles off to a good start scoring 7 of the teams first 10 points.  The Eagles led at halftime 40-31.

Mitchell led the Eagles with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  He was followed by PG Will Dillard who scored 17 points and added 6 assists and 4 rebounds.  Eric Mullins was also in double figures with 12 points and 4 rebounds.  Daniel Day (9 points, 6 rebs), Corey Hairston (9 pts, 4 rebs), Preston Simon (6 pts, 2 rebs), and Corey Dixon (6 pts, 1 reb) also had solid games.  Casey Dalton scored 2 points and played a solid floor game.The Eagles are off for a Christmas break until Dec. 29th and 30th when they play in the Union College Classic at Barbourville.  Their opponents will be Lincoln Memorial University and Miami University-Middletown.

EAGLES LOSE CLOSE ONE TO KCU

Lose to # 2 Georgetown College

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles lost a close game on the road last week to Kentucky Christian University, 77-73.  Corey Hairston had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Eric Mullins finished with 19 points and 4 rebounds.  Will Dillard (15 pts, 6 rebs) and freshman Center Corey Dixon (10 pts, 8 rebs) were also in double figures. 

On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Berea to play as part of a three game KIAC/Mid-South Challenge.  The Eagles played nationally ranked Georgetown College (Ranked # 2, NAIA., Div I).  After being tied at 10, the Tigers had a 9 point run and led at halftime 47-26.  The Eagles played much better in the second half, getting outscored 40-36, in the 87-62 loss.  Hairston was the only player in double figures for the Eagles.  He finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds.  Dillard had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.  Mullins had 8 points and 3 rebounds.  Rodney Mitchell and Daniel Day scored 7 points each.

The Eagles will host Mid-Continent University this Saturday afternoon at 2:00.  Their next game will be December 29 and 30, in the Union College Classic at Barbourville, KY.  Their opponents will be Lincoln Memorial University and Miami University-Middletown.

EAGLES FALL TO MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY AND PIKEVILLE

 

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles played a couple of very tough competitors last week as they traveled to Morehead State University on Monday and Pikeville College on Wednesday.  In the Morehead game, the Eagles trailed 39-25 at halftime in route to an 85-51 loss.  The Eagles had 28 turnovers in the game.  Rodney Mitchell was the only Eagle in double figures.  He finished with 13 points.  Daniel Day finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds.   Preston Simon, William Dillard and Corey Hairston each finished with 6 points.  The Eagles played tough in the first half at Pikeville.  They trailed by 11 until a last second three by Pikeville at the end of the half made the score 39-25.  The Eagles were then outscored 51-22 in the second half in a 90-47 loss.  Dillard led the way with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Day pitched in 11 points and 5 rebounds.  Mitchell scored 8 points and William Jones had 7 points and 4 rebounds. 

This week the Eagles will play at Kentucky Christian University on Tuesday and they will play nationally ranked Georgetown College at Berea on Saturday as part of the KIAC/Mid-South Challenge.

EAGLES LOSE TO UNION AND MIDCONTINENT UNIVERSITY

 

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles lost two tough games last week.  On Tuesday night, they traveled to Barbourville to play Union College.  The Eagles led 36-34 at halftime.  The Eagles trailed 59-58 with a little over five minutes to play in the game.  Turnovers and several missed opportunities at the free throw line resulted in a 69-62 loss.  Rodney Mitchell, Eric Mullins and Preston Simon each scored 10 points for the Eagles.  Freshman center Corey Dixon came off the bench to get 9 points and 5 rebounds.  PG William Dillard had 8 points and 4 assists and Corey Hairston pulled down 8 rebounds. On Saturday, the Eagles traveled across the state to Mayfield, KY to play MidContinent University.  They trailed by double digits early in the game, but fought back to lead 47-46 at halftime.  In the second half, the Cougars hit 19 of 28 field goal attempts and 19 of 22 from the free throw line in route to the 103-88 win.  Mitchell led five players in double figures with 18 points and 2 rebounds.  Simon had 15 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Mullins with 13 points and 4 rebounds.  Hairston (11 pts, 5 rebs) and Dillard (11 pts, 6 assists) were also in double figures.  William Jones (5 pts, 2 rebounds) played his best game since returning from an injury.  Michael Lindon chipped in with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The Eagles will be busy this week with three games.  They will host UV@Wise on Tuesday and Virginia Intermont on Thursday before hitting the road against nationally ranked Mountain State University on Saturday.

EAGLES WIN SEASON OPENER IN 2 OVERTIMES

 

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles won their season opener last Tuesday night in a thrilling 95-91, two overtime contest against Kentucky Christian University.  The Eagles led 34-30 at halftime, but KCU point guard Matt Hackenburg hit a three pointer with seven-tenths of a second to go to tie the score at 74 and sent it into the first overtime.  The score was tied at 81 at the end of the first overtime.  PG Will Dillard hit 4 crucial free throws to help put the game away for the Eagles.

Dillard finished with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.  Center Rodney Mitchell poured in 30 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.  Corey Hairston had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Eric Mullins hit a couple of big baskets and finished with 12 points, 3 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds.  Daniel Day had 9 points and 7 rebounds.  Preston Simon (5 pts), Corey Dixon (4 pts, 2 rebs), Justin Howard (3 pts), and William Jones (2 pts, 2 rebs) rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.  Forward Michael Lindon made some big contributions on the defensive end of the court.

The Eagles traveled to Barbourville to play Union College on Tuesday night.  They will travel to Mayfield, Kentucky on Saturday for a game against Mid-Continent University.

ALC MEN’S JV OPENS WITH TWO WINS

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles JV team opened its season last week with two wins, 112-50 over Southwest Virginia Community College and 100-91 over the University of the Cumberlands JV.  In the win over SWVCC, 14 players entered the scoring column led by Jason Arnett with 18 points and 5 rebounds.  Brent Newsome (14 pts, 8 rebs), Kevin Meade (12 pts), Tyson Gross (11 pts, 7 rebs) and Jordan Fugate (10 pts) were also in double figures. The game against the Cumberlands JV was much closer and a very entertaining game.  The Eagles overcame a 37-36 halftime deficit to get the 100-91 win.  Jason Arnett (26 pts) and Gross (20 pts, 5 rebs) led the way.  Eric Arnett had 13 points.  Justin Triplett (11 pts) and Fugate (10 pts) were also in double figure scoring.  Denny Ray Farler picked up 9 points.  This week, the Eagles JV traveled to Union College on Monday night and will travel to Simmons Junior College (Louisville, KY) on Thursday night.  The Eagles JV team is coached by former Eagle basketball and baseball player, Byron Hall.

ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE EAGLES BASKETBALL SIGNEES

 

Gary Gibson, men’s basketball coach at Alice Lloyd College has announced the signing of four new players for next year. 

On Wednesday, the Eagles signed Brandon Hayes and Cody Berryman.   Hayes is a 6’3”, 180 lb. forward from Breathitt County High School.  He averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds per game for Coach Steve Banks and the Bobcats.  He had a season high of 17 rebounds on two different occasions last season.   He shot 59% from the field and 68% from the free throw line on the year.

Berryman is a 6’1”, 190 lb. shooting guard from Estill County High School where he played for Coach Larry Tiller.  He averaged 16.4 points, 2.3 assists and 6.8 rebounds (led team) his senior year.  He shot 51% from the field, 37% from behind the three point arc and 78% from the free throw line this year.  He scored over 1300 points in his high school career and finished as the 4th  All Time leader in points scored at Estill County. 

On Thursday, the Eagles signed Brandon Phillips, a 6’3” forward from St. Paul High School (VA).  Phillips averaged 16.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game this past season.  He shot 54% from the field and 72% from the free throw line.  He also shot 39% from behind the three point line.  He played for Coach Patrick Damron, a former player for the Eagles.  Phillips was also an All State football player, an All Region baseball player and advanced to the State in Track in the 400m run.

The Eagles signed Bobby Williams on Friday.  Williams is 6’1”, 175 lb. shooting guard from Menifee County High School.  He played his senior year for Coach Chris Barrier.  Williams averaged 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists on the year.  He shot 49% from the field and 86% from the free throw line.  He also hit 38% of his three point attempts.  

These players will join Corey Dixon (6’8” Center, Pulaski County),  Casey Dalton (6’0”, PG, Pulaski Southwestern) and Michael Lindon (6’3”, G/F, Knott Central) who  have already signed to play for the Eagles.

LINDON SIGNS WITH ALICE LLOYD EAGLES

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles have signed their third basketball player for next year.  Michael Lindon, a 6’3” guard/forward signed with the Eagles last Tuesday.  Lindon averaged 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists per game last year for the Knott Central Patriots and Coach Justin Amburgey.  According to Coach Gary Gibson, “Michael is a very versatile player.  He can play the point guard position as well as on the wing.  He is very athletic and a good defensive player. He has a great attitude about the game.  We are looking forward to Michael becoming a part of the Eagles basketball team.

Lindon joins Corey Dixon (6’8” center, Pulaski Co.) and Casey Dalton (6’0” PG, Pulaski Southwestern) as new members of the Eagles team for next year.

Senior Chris Hurt was presented with a plaque from Coach Gibson representing his Courage, Leadership and Intense Desire to Succeed on the basketball court during his four years as a member of the team.  Chris came back to play his senior year after a life threatening illness during his junior year.  Senior Winston Lee was presented with the Coach’s Award.  JV Coach Byron Johnson and JV assistant coach Jeremy Jackson were presented with plaques.  Varsity assistant coach Jeff Johnson was also thanked by Coach Gibson for the many years that he has been on his staff.

ALC’s RODNEY MITCHELL INVITED TO PARTICIPATE ON INTERNATIONAL ALL-STAR TEAM THIS SUMMER

Rodney Mitchell, a 6’7” sophomore center for the Alice Lloyd College Eagles is one of ten players recently invited to participate on the USA Athletes International basketball team that will travel to Barbados this Summer.  USA Athletes International is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving amateur athletes an opportunity to participate in sporting events in the international theater, while allowing them to broaden their educational and cultural knowledge of the world through the experience.

The team is scheduled to leave May 31 and return June 7.  They will play five games in Barbados.  This is an excellent event designed to foster international goodwill and friendship, as well as promote the game of basketball internationally.

Mitchell averaged 16 points and 5 rebounds for the Eagles this year.  He was also named to the KIAC All-Conference Team.  He is a graduate of Clay County High School.

ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMPS CANCELLED

 

The Alice Lloyd College Summer Basketball Camps that are usually scheduled for the last two weeks in June have been cancelled for this summer.   The cancellations are due to major renovations that will be taking place in the Grady Nutt Athletic Center throughout the summer.  The camps are scheduled to continue in the Summer of 2008.

EAGLES LOSE TO BEREA IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles played Berea in the opening round of the KIAC Tournament last Thursday in Louisville.  They trailed 43-38 at halftime in route to an 86-75 loss.  ALC shot well (29 of 52 for 55%) in the game; however, Berea shot an astounding 65% (33 of 51) on the day.  PG William Dillard (20 pts, 7 assists) and Senior guard Shawn Newsome (19 pts, 4 rebs) kept the Eagles close.  Eric Mullins (12 pts, 3 rebs) and Daniel Day (11 pts, 4 rebs) rounded out the double figure scorers.  Corey Hairston chipped in with 7 points.  All-Conference player Rodney Mitchell was held to 6 points and 4 rebounds in the game.  Senior PG Chris Hurt injured his knee less than three minutes into the game and was unable to return.

MEN’S KIAC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED

Mitchell of Alice Lloyd Named to Team

The men’s KIAC All-Conference team was announced at the KIAC Tournament in Louisville this past weekend.  Rodney Mitchell, a 6’7” sophomore center for the Alice Lloyd College Eagles was named as a member of team.  Mitchell is a graduate of Clay County High School.  He averaged about 16 points and 5 rebounds on the season.  Other players named to the team were:  Tomas Klimas and Melvin Brown of Berea, Brandon Ritchie and Craig Bryant of IUS, Chartae’l Hall, William Ford and Adrian Del Las Heras of Spalding, and Derek Bland of Asbury.  Brett Johnson of Asbury was named Player of the Year.  Jim Aller of Asbury was named Coach of the Year.

EAGLES BEAT BEREA COLLEGE

Lose to Asbury and Spalding

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles closed out the regular season last week.  They beat Berea College at home on Friday night by the score of 59-56.  The Eagles led 27-26 at halftime.  Center Rodney Mitchell (16 pts, 6 rebs) hit a short jumper with 7 seconds to go in the game to put the Eagles up by three points.  The Mountaineers last second shot fell short to preserve the win.  Shawn Newsome (15 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists) and Eric Mullins (10 pts, 3 rebs) were also in double figures.  Corey Hairston had 8 points and 6 rebounds.   William Dillard also had 8 points in the game.

Earlier in the week, the Eagles lost at Asbury College, 81-64.  They trailed at halftime 37-35.  Dillard (17 pts, 3 assists), Newsome (10 pts, 4 rebs) and Hairston (12 pts, 11 rebs) were in double figures.  Mitchell had 9 points and 2 rebounds, followed by Mullins with 7 points and 3 rebounds.

On Saturday night, the Eagles played at Spalding University.  The Eagles trailed 35-30 at halftime.  They cut the deficit to 6, 64-58 with 2:54 to go in the game.  However, Spalding pulled away down the stretch for a 74-60 win.  Mitchell (21 pts, 4 rebs) and Dillard (11 pts, 2 assists) were the only players in double figures. 

The Eagles will play Berea College on Thursday afternoon at 12:00 in the first round of the KIAC Tournament in Louisville.

EAGLES BEAT UV@WISE

Lose to Brescia University

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles split their two games last week.  On Thursday they won at UV@Wise by the score of 76-73.  The Eagles trailed 38-35 at halftime.  Point guard Will Dillard (12 pts, 5 rebs, 4 assists, 4 steals) had a steal and layup to tie the score at 73 with about 30 seconds to go in the game.  After the Cavaliers missed on their next possession, Shawn Newsome (12 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists) hit a layup and a free throw with 9 seconds to go to put the Eagles ahead to stay.  Rodney Mitchell led the team with 17 points and 2 rebounds, despite playing only 15 minutes due to foul trouble,   Eric Mullins (14 pts, 6 rebs) and Corey Hairston (10 pts, 4 rebs) were also in double figures for the Eagles. 

On Saturday afternoon, the Eagles lost a tough game to Brescia University, 76-67.  Poor shooting (8 of 26) in the first half led to a 34-25 halftime deficit.  Each team scored 42 points in the second half.  Mitchell had 20 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Mullins with 17 points and 5 rebounds.   Daniel Day had a good game with 16 points and 4 rebounds.  The Berea game scheduled for last Tuesday night was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

This week, the Eagles will be on the road Tuesday (at Asbury College) and Saturday (at Spalding University).  The Berea game has been rescheduled for Friday night at 6:00.  It will also be Senior Night at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center.

EAGLES LOSE CLOSE ONE TO IUS, 91-89

Lose to Pikeville

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles lost a tough battle at home on Saturday to Indian University-Southeast by the score of 91-89.  The Eagles trailed 40-37 at halftime before fighting back to tie the score at 75.  IUS hit a basket with 2.9 seconds left on the clock for the win.  Five players were in double figures.  The Eagles shot the ball very well from the field (37 of 68 for 54%).  Rodney Mitchell (21 pts, 4 rebs) and Corey Hairston (18 pts, 6 rebs) led the way.  PG William Dillard had 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  Daniel Day (13 pts, 4 rebs) and Shawn Newsome  (12 pts, 2 assists) rounded out the double figure scoring.   IUS blistered the nets, hitting 16 of 31 three point field goal attempts (52%) and 33 of 54 overall (61%) for the game.

Earlier in the week, the Eagles lost at Pikeville by the score of 78-63.  They trailed at halftime, 40-26.  Mitchell (15 pts, 7 rebs), Hairston (12 pts, 7 rebs) and Dillard (12 pts, 3 assists) were the leading scorers for the Eagles.  Day finished with 9 points and 3 rebounds. 

This Tuesday night will be Senior night when the Eagles host Berea College.  On Thursday night, they will travel to Wise, VA to play UV@Wise.  On Saturday afternoon, the Eagles will play their final home game of the year in a 3:00 tip-off against Brescia University.

EAGLES LOSE TO ASBURY AND BRESCIA UNIVERSITY

 

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles lost to Asbury College, 95-74 and Brescia University, 73-55 last week.  The Asbury game was close at halftime, as the Eagles trailed 43-37.  However, Asbury went on a big run early in the second half and the Eagles were unable to fight back.  Shawn Newsome (19 pts, 2 rebs) and Rodney Mitchell (17 pts, 1 reb) were the only Eagles in double figures in the game.

In the game at Owensboro on Saturday afternoon, the Eagles fell behind early by the score of 17-4.  They cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, but were unable to get any closer than eight points.  Mitchell (11 pts, 4 rebs), Newsome (11 pts, 2 rebs), and William Dillard (10 pts, 2 rebs, 1 assist) were in double figures for the Eagles.  Corey Hairston finished with 9 points and 2 rebounds.  Dillard left the game midway through the second half with an ankle injury.  The Eagles hit only 20 of 55 field goal attempts in the game.

This week the Eagles will travel to Pikeville on Tuesday and host IU-Southeast on Saturday afternoon at 4:00.

 

 

EAGLES WIN OVER BOYCE COLLEGE

 

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles played their last game of the semester last Saturday afternoon.  They came away with a 104-82  win over Boyce College.  The Eagles led 55-33 at halftime in route to the win.  They shot extremely well, hitting 43 of 66 shots (65%).  Shawn Newsome (25 pts, 2 assists) and Rodney Mitchell (22 pts, 7 rebs) led the way for the Eagles.  William Dillard (12 pts, 3 assists, 3 rebs), Preston Simon (11 pts, 2 rebs), and Corey Hairston (10 pts, 4 rebs) were also in double figures.  William Jones and Daniel Day each scored 8 points.  Chris Hurt had 7 assists in the game.

 

The Eagles next games with be on January 5&6 at the Embry-Riddle Tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida.
