Eagles Baseball Coaches 2012-13

Baseball Coaching Staff

L to R: Assistant Coach Jason Stowers, Assistant Coach Gary Hammond, Head Coach Scott Cornett, Assistant Coach David Hatfield, and Assistant Coach Julian Deaton

Head Coach Scott Cornett

Scott Cornett
Head Coach, 23rd Season

Scott Cornett claims Hyden. KY as his hometown, but he has spent a good chunk of his time in Pippa Passes. He played baseball for ALC from 1985-1989 before going on to play two seasons as a catcher for the White Sox. He has earned various honors and achievements, including being named a 3-time MVP in high school and college, 3-time 1st Team All-Conference, an All-American (1988-89), 2nd in the nation in batting average (1989), and was invited to both the Pan AM and USA Olympic Tryouts. Coach Cornett is also a proud member of the Leslie County High School Hall of Fame and the ALC Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Eagles Head Coach clearly enjoys teaching the game of baseball. “What I like most about coaching at ALC is the kids,” he says.  “I’ve built a lot of good relationships with my players.” Coach Cornett encourages his athletes to play hard and to have fun, because, as he is quick to tell them, “You will spend the rest of your life wishing you could do it again.”

“Ultimately, as a player, you have to make sure that you can do all the little things.  But your number-one priority should be to go to class and enjoy this time.”

Coach Cornett lives in Pippa Passes with his wife, Kim, daughter, Haley, and son, Dalton. He has coached Eagles Baseball for 23 years and also acts as the College’s Dean of Students & Community Life.

Julian Deaton, Jr.

Julian Deaton, Jr.
Assistant Coach, 14th Season

Julian Deaton, Jr., known to his players as “Coach D,” hails from Wheelwright, KY. The upcoming 2013 season will mark Coach Deaton‘s 14th season with the Eagles. Prior to working with the Eagles, he served as a coach for Little League Baseball, the Babe Ruth League, Allen Central High School baseball, and American Legion Baseball, amassing 39 years of total coaching experience. He also brings 37 years of playing experience to the field.

It is evident that Coach Deaton loves guiding student-athletes. “My ultimate award,” he says, “is actually a reward: God has allowed me to instruct young people in two of my passions – baseball and swimming (Lifeguarding).”  He enjoys teaching the game of baseball and passing along “old school philosophies” to young men hungry to compete at the college level. Coach Deaton has a very specific coaching philosophy: 1. Teach the rules of the game, emphasizing perfection of the fundamentals, which applies to running, hitting, catching, and throwing; 2. Teach, encourage, and demand that each baseball player establish discipline both on and off the field; 3. Each player must already be or work earnestly at becoming a gentleman in all phases of his life; 4. Maintain open lines of communication with coaches, players, parents, and administrators; 5. Strive to build rapport with players through caring and motivation; 6. Operate/Manage a well-organized program; 7. Prepare each player as to the mental game of baseball (without the mental game, there can be no quality physical game); and 8. Inform each athlete that the game of baseball is not complicated, but it is complex. Teach the complexities!

Coach Deaton wishes to remind prospective student-athletes that there is a reason why “student” always precedes “athlete.” He says, “If you do not take care of business in the classroom, you will not have the opportunity to take care of business on the baseball field. Become disciplined in time management so that you make time for all of your daily responsibilities.”

He resides in Hueysville, KY with his wife, Alberta. They have two daughters, Krystal and Heather, one son, Jarrid, and one grandchild, Gavin, 3.
