Marketing & Communications at ALC

Marketing and Communications Student Workers in the Radio StationThe Office of Marketing & Communications seeks to send out the message of Alice Lloyd College to the region and the world. The Marketing Director creates promotional materials — brochures, viewbooks, billboards, pamphlets, and more — that capture the College’s story in creative and informative ways. This office is also responsible for the production of Pippa’s Song, the official newsletter of Alice Lloyd College and The June Buchanan School, as well as college commercials, news articles and press releases, and photo collections. All such materials are kept in the archives at Eagle’s Nest, the building which houses Marketing & Communications.

In 2017 the College launched a new version of its website, www.alc.edu, which has helped to increase the College’s reach and visibility. The Assistant to the Marketing Director, also known as the webmaster, maintains and manages all aspects of the website’s content, look, and feel. Along with those duties, the Marketing Director and the assistant oversee all Alice Lloyd social media sites — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and YouTube.

In conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, the Office of Marketing & Communications also plans and directs the College’s signature social event, Our Appalachia Day Homecoming. Held each year on the second Saturday in October, “Appalachia Day” is a fall festival celebration that draws in the local community, regional visitors, and alumni. It is meant to be a special day on which the College community pauses to pay honor to its Appalachian heritage and history, its graduates, and the unique artistic achievements of the region’s people.

WWJD-FM Radio Station

The ALC Radio Station, WWJD-FM (Eagle 91.7), is an educational non-commercial radio station owned and operated by the College, and licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It is assigned a frequency of 91.7 MHz and an effective radio power of 7.3 kilowatts. Its studios are located in the historic Eagle’s Nest on the campus of Alice Lloyd College.

WWJD-FM features Inspirational programming 24-hours a day, every day as a service to the community surrounding Pippa Passes, including the towns of Hindman, Campton, Harlan, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Salyersville, and Whitesburg. The station broadcasts home games for the Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams.

A radio station manager is responsible for the operation of the station, including its management and public relations. The manager supervises students who are a part of the Student Work Program as they perform various tasks in the station’s operation. Student work positions include radio DJs, sportscasters, writers, photographers, Web content assistants, and office assistants.

Eagle’s Nest

This was the name given to the building that houses the Office of Marketing & Communications and the ALC Radio Station. It was named “Eagle’s Nest” by Miss June Buchanan who conducted various interviews in the building’s former tea room. Buchanan famously had tea with Senator Robert Kennedy when he visited the College in 1968. All memorabilia from this time period is now housed in Cushing Hall, which is only a short walk from the station.
