The Caney Scholars

Many of our alumni have benefited from Alice Lloyd’s Caney Cottage Scholarship Program. This program, the only one of its kind in the nation, financially assists qualified alumni from our 108-county service area in Central Appalachia at graduate or professional schools upon completion of their program at Alice Lloyd College. Students attending the University of Kentucky live in ALC-owned housing near the campus. Those at other graduate schools receive cash stipends toward tuition if they qualify for a Caney/Berger Scholarship. These scholarships are offered on a competitive basis.

The College’s goal is to help our graduates as they pursue advanced degrees and then return these highly-educated Appalachians back to the region to become the catalysts for change. Eighty-three percent of you have come back to Appalachia and are working every day to provide the leadership the region needs to push forward into a brighter future.

Alice Lloyd College gives more to its students because it expects more of its students. We only ask that our graduates give back to the region and to this college. We want to give every Appalachian student we can the gift of a quality education that will open doors to them that might otherwise remain closed forever. All our young people need is an opportunity. Continue to support the college that remained steadfast in supporting you!

Here are some of our recent Caney Scholars:

“I am so grateful to have received an education at Alice Lloyd College. ALC provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge in preparation for medical school. During my time at ALC, I developed the self-discipline and work ethic necessary to achieve my goals, skills that I have utilized in the classroom as well as during my clinical rotations. The path to becoming a physician is expensive, so I am blessed to have graduated from ALC debt-free. The financial assistance I was given through Alice Lloyd’s Caney Berger Scholarship during professional school was also invaluable to me. Upon completion of my training I plan to practice medicine in the east KY area, and I look forward to giving back to a school that has so generously supported me throughout my educational endeavors.”

Lesley Hatfield 2Lesley HatfieldPennington Gap, VA / University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences

“I made a great decision by attending Alice Lloyd. It makes me proud to share with others about this place, and I will always be convinced that there isn’t another school in this nation that could have given me everything that ALC has. When people ask me where I went to college, I am always honored to tell them Alice Lloyd!”

Holly AmburgeyHolly Amburgey Litt Carr, KY / Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine

“The educational experience I gained at Alice Lloyd allowed me to evolve as a student and become independent in my studying and self-learning abilities. As a graduate student now in veterinary school, I’ve come to realize that education is by no means affordable. I’m incredibly thankful for the Caney Scholars Program. Every penny is another step towards paying for my education, and the scholarship make a huge difference. I’m so excited and appreciative to be able to do this and now give back what I’ve been given.”

“The faculty and staff at Alice Lloyd College have been invaluable in fostering my intellectual pursuits, but also in helping me grow as a person. The college, the friends I made there, and those who work daily to keep the College’s vision alive are constant sources of inspiration to me. Once my education is complete, I hope to return to Appalachia and work to educate future generations of leaders.”

“Choosing to go to Alice Lloyd College was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My time at Alice Lloyd prepared me not only for medical school, but for the workforce. And, amazingly, Alice Lloyd continues to help me even after I have graduated through the Caney Cottage Scholarship. I would encourage anyone to attend Alice Lloyd College.”

Stephen MeltonStephen MeltonHazard, KY / University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy

“My life would not be the same without Alice Lloyd College. It has helped prepare me for a successful future, and it has put me in a position to achieve my dream of becoming a pharmacist. It is truly one of the best decisions I have made. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to go to school, especially if they plan to attend graduate or professional school.”
