Alice Lloyd College

Austin Allan

Hey! I’m Austin, and I’m a senior here at ALC.

I’m from Kentucky, born and raised in the “truck stop with a zip code” more commonly referred to as Grayson. I’m a biology pre-medicine major with aspirations to attend the University of Kentucky College of Medicine upon graduation from Alice Lloyd. I love being here at ALC! My classes are challenging, I have a great work-study in the Admissions Office, and I’ve made some wonderful friends.

I’m really having an excellent time here at this one-of-a-kind school, and I encourage you to come check it out for yourself.- Austin Allen, Admissions Ambassador

Q & A with Austin

  1. Why did you choose to attend college at Alice Lloyd?

I chose to attend ALC because of the character-based education I’d heard so much about. I wanted to go to a small school that could provide me with one-on-one attention, and nowhere could pull that off to my standards quite like ALC. I also received the Presidential Scholarship, which, along with the Appalachian Leaders Scholarship that guarantees tuition, allowed me to attend ALC for little to no cost. How could I possibly turn that down?

  2. What campus activities can students become involved in?

ALC has a big intramurals program that any and all students can participate in. There’s also a TON of clubs and organizations that I encourage everyone to get involved with. As president of the Allied Health Club, I encourage all pre-health majors to join! And then, on the weekends or in the evenings, you can take a trip to Hazard, Pikeville, or Prestonsburg (towns that have movie theaters, restaurants, shopping, bowling, etc.), which are only a short distance away.

  3. Which residence hall do you call home? What’s the best aspect of living on campus?

I live in Berger-Auen Hall, the men’s residence hall for upperclassmen. Living on campus has caused me to do a lot of growing up. I have the freedom that I’ve always wanted, and I’m really learning to take care of myself. It’s definitely very different from living at home, but I like it a lot!

  4. Do you feel safe on campus?

That almost seems like a silly question when you’re talking about ALC! Of course I feel safe on campus. Pippa Passes is such a small place that its police department is actually located on ALC’s campus. What’s better is that it’s right across the road from the men’s dorms. There’s rarely any cause for alarm, and the crime rate is virtually non-existent. So, yes, I’m very comfortable saying that I feel safe on campus.

  5. Do you find it difficult to balance the demands of classes at ALC, your work-study, and extracurricular activities? What advice would you give to a potential or current ALC student about successfully handling all aspects of college life?

Life at ALC is a big adjustment to make from high school. You have to practice good time management skills. Classes are more challenging and you have to study. Along with that, you have to make time to complete your work-study responsibilities, and if you can, there are extracurricular activities to take into account. When you first dive in, it can be overwhelming. It’s sometimes difficult to balance everything, but if you keep a schedule or calendar, it’s easy to stay organized. And organization is the key to being successful in college!

  6. In your opinion, what makes Alice Lloyd the best choice for prospective college students?

Like any school, ALC is not for everyone. If you’re not prepared to work hard for your education, it’s probably not for you. But if you’re looking for a school where you can earn a genuine, character-based education at an affordable cost, then Alice Lloyd is a good fit for you!

  7. What are your goals for life after ALC?

I plan on furthering my education in medical school, preferable at the University of Kentucky. Why UK? My Presidential Scholarship guaranteed me a spot in Caney Cottage (an apartment complex owned by ALC on UK’s campus) and will provide me with a substantial stipend for living expenses wherever I go. I certainly can’t turn that offer down!
