ALC Business DressAlice Lloyd College provides a comprehensive leadership development program for its students. This program focuses upon leadership philosophy, citizenship, and cultural development. The College attempts to infuse leadership education initiatives into all aspects of the educational experience, including formal classroom instruction, activities that help students learn to cope with cultures outside of Appalachia, group learning activities, involvement in service to others, opportunities to question their moral, ethical, and religious positions, and activities that place them in leadership roles.

Academics, Student Services, and the Student Work Program have combined resources to create a formal leadership development program with the specific mission of preparing leaders to serve Appalachia. Alice Lloyd College’s liberal arts education prepares students to lead responsible, productive and creative lives in a dramatically changing world. The bachelor’s degree is designed to meet the challenges of life-long learning, namely the continuous development of skills, knowledge and understanding that are essential for employability and leadership.

  • Historically, Alice Lloyd College has been committed to not only meeting the educational needs of those living in our region, but also in helping to meet social needs through various community outreach programs.
  • The Freshman Transition Program, also known as the “Bridge Program,” serves to provide a successful transition from high school to college. Students are eligible for institutional credit and a Leadership Certificate when they become upperclassmen.
  • The Student Work Program promotes responsibility and self-discipline, important foundations upon which character and leadership skills are built.
  • The required Leadership Education class provides students with a fundamental understanding of leadership and opportunities to develop leadership abilities.
  • Full-time faculty live on campus at Alice Lloyd College to promote ethical and moral living.
  • Alice Lloyd College provides students the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the Voices of Appalachia choir, athletics, the Theatre Program, mission trip opportunities through Baptist Collegiate Ministries, the Washington Center Program, intramural sports, community service and continuing education.

Program Components

  1. Registration – Students must register for the program with the Leadership Program Coordinator.
  2. Academic – Students must complete Leadership 101 and complete the Bridge Program for academic credit.
  3. Leadership Seminars – Students must attend four Leadership Seminars after enrolling in the Leadership Education Program, which will be offered through the Convocation Program. Students will be required to provide proof of attendance.
  4. Leadership Workshops – Students must attend the Leadership Workshops that will be offered the week before the beginning of the fall semester. The topics that will be covered include: Planning and Development of Goals and Objectives, Leadership and Motivational Styles, Experiential Exercise in Team Building, and Conflict Resolution.
  5. Community Service – Students must complete 40 hours of community service after enrolling in the Leadership Education Program and provide appropriate documentation of their work. Community service includes volunteer activities that involve service to others as well as involvement in campus or community clubs and organizations.
  6. Special Recognition – Students who complete all of the aforementioned requirements will receive the Servant Leader Award, which will be presented at the Honors Day Ceremony.
