Course Descriptions

The major in English provides the student with knowledge of the human condition through a comprehensive reading of literature. This major enhances writing skills and provides preparation for graduate and professional school. The course of study will increase the student’s knowledge of 19th and 20th century American literature, British literature, critical theory, gender studies, poetry, composition, writing styles, how to develop and support a thesis, research, major authors and key literary movements, and much more.

Why English?

English majors have skills that many employers seek, including excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, ability for teamwork, initiative, interpersonal skills, effective problem solving techniques, and, perhaps most importantly, English majors write well. Most jobs require written communication, so superior writing skills save an employer money. Research shows that companies spend $3.1 billion annually retaining workers to write. The major in English could lead to a job in journalism, acting, advertizing, court reporting, public relations, songwriting, speechwriting, technical writing, teaching, newspaper publishing, freelance writing, book critiquing, and more.

Make your own mark in history! Who knows? With Appalachia’s rich tradition of producing talented writers, you might be the region’s next great novelist or poet.

General Education Requirements / 54 hours

Students should become familiar with the requirements for their individual programs and work with their advisors to ensure that all degree requirements will be met. A guide sheet is extremely helpful in academic planning. Students wishing to major in English can access a downloadable version (pdf) of the guide sheet at the top of this page, or he or she may obtain one from his or her Faculty Advisor or from the Registrar.
