PHYS 101: Conceptual Physics

Offered: Spring

Laboratory course in Conceptual Physics. Topics covered will include: mechanics, sound, electricity and magnetism, light and modern physics. Intended primarily for non-science majors. Three lecture hours and two lab hours.

PHYS 211: General Physics I

Prerequisites: MATH 113

Offered: Fall

The mechanics of solids, liquids, gases and heat. Intended primarily for non-physics, non-mathematics, non-engineering science majors. Three lecture hours and three lab hours.

PHYS 212: General Physics II

Prerequisites: PHYS 211

Offered: Spring

Sound, magnetism electricity, and light with some introductory work in modern physics. Three lecture hours and three lab hours.

4 credit hours

PHYS 231: General Physics with Calculus I

Prerequisites: MATH 125

Offered: Fall

Mechanics, heat, wave motion and oscillatory motion. Intended for students majoring in chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. Three lecture hours, three lab hours, and one recitation hour.

5 credit hours

PHYS 232: General Physics with Calculus II

Prerequisites: PHYS 231

Offered: Spring

Continuation of Physics 231. Sound, electricity and magnetism, light and introduction to modern physics. Three lecture hours, three lab hours, and one recitation hour.

5 credit hours

PHYS 331: Modern Physics

Prerequisites: PHYS 212 or 232

Offered: Fall

Special relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular structure, solid state and nuclear physics, including radiation physics. Three lecture hours.

3 credit hours

PHYS 351: Classical Mechanics

Prerequisites: PHYS 212 or 232; MATH 126 recommended

Offered: Spring

Vector analysis, statics and dynamics of particles and rigid bodies, oscillations, Langrangian and Hamiltonian formulations.

3 credit hours

PHYS 401: Experimental Physics I

Prerequisites: PHYS 212 or 232

Offered: Fall, as needed

Selected experiments in mechanics, electricity and magnetism.

1 credit hour

PHYS 402: Experimental Physics II

Prerequisites: PHYS 212 or 232

Offered: Spring, as needed

Selected experiments in optics, atomic and nuclear physics, including radiation detection.

1 credit hour

PHYS 460-469: Special Topics in Physics

Prerequisites: Junior standing and permission of instructor

Offered: As needed

Elective courses may be offered as special topics in physics on an occasional basis depending on the availability and interests of students and faculty.

1-4 credit hours
