101 Conceptual Physics

Laboratory course in Conceptual Physics. Topics covered will include: mechanics, sound, electricity and magnetism, light and modern physics. Intended primarily for non-science majors. Three lecture hours and two lab hours.


211 General Physics I

Prerequisite: Math 113

Offered: Fall

4 credit hours

The mechanics of solids, liquids, gases and heat. Intended primarily for non-physics, non-mathematics, non-engineering science majors. Three lecture hours and three lab hours.


212 General Physics II

Prerequisite: Phys 211

Offered: Spring

4 credit hours

Sound, magnetism electricity, and light, with some introductory work in modern physics. Three lecture hours and three lab hours.


231 General Physics with Calculus I

Prerequisite: Math 125

Offered: Fall

5 credit hours

Mechanics, heat, wave motion and oscillatory motion. Intended for students majoring in chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. Three lecture hours, three lab hours and one recitation hour.


232 General Physics with Calculus II

Prerequisite: Phys 231

Offered: Spring

5 credit hours

Continuation of Physics 231. Sound, electricity and magnetism, light and introduction to modern physics. Three lecture hours, three lab hours, and one recitation hour.


331 Modern Physics

Prerequisite: Phys 212 or 232

Offered: Fall

3 credit hours

Special relativity, quantum mechanics, atomis and molecular structure, solid state and nuclear physics including radiation physics. Three lecture hours.


351 Classical Mechanics

Prerequisite: Phys 212 or 232; Math 126 recommended

Offered: Spring

3 credit hours

Vector analysis, statics and dynamics of particles and rigid bodies, oscillations, Langrangian and Hamiltonian formulations.


401 Experimental Physics I

Prerequisite: Phys 212 or 232

Offered: Fall, as needed

Selected experiments in mechanics, electricity and magnetism.


402 Experimental Physics II

Prerequisite: Phys 212 or 232

Offered: Spring, as needed

1 credit hour

Selected experiments in optics, atomic and nuclear physics including radiation detection.


460-469 Special Topics in Physics

Prerequisite: Junior standing and permission of instructor

Elective courses may be offered as special topics in physics on an occasional basis depending on the availability and interests of students and faculty.
